Background

At some point in 2005, Taylor released a digital EP called “Majorly Indie Demos”. The tracklisting is incomplete and unclear, but according to SwiftFacts on Tumblr, the demos of “SuperStar” and “We Were Happy” were on there. “SuperStar” finally was finally released as part of Fearless [Platinum Edition] on October 26, 2009, which is a reissue of the original album with six news songs added to the beginning of the tracklist. Taylor told iTunes in an interview:

«The six new songs on the Fearless [Platinum Edition] are songs that I either recorded and wrote really recently, wrote maybe a year ago and almost put on Fearless but decided not to for one reason or another, or a songs that I wrote when I was 14/15 and re-recorded recently. It's a good mixture of songs from different time periods throughout my life. When I make an album, I always have a general theme for it. And when I hear songs, or go back and listen to old ones, there are some that I know fit in with the theme.»

Lyrical Theme

“SuperStar” is about Taylor’s celebrity crush, and how much she is infatuated with him. Although she knows that she’s just another fan of his and that he’ll probably never notice her, she still dreams about him feeling the same way about her, as she does about him.

Live Performance

Taylor first performed “SuperStar” fifteen years after its release. It was the first surprise song during her show on July 17, 2024, on “The Eras Tour” in Gelsenkirchen. She mashed it up with “invisible string” (2020).
