Snow On The Beach

Single | Featuring Lana Del Rey | Midnights (2022)

“Snow On The Beach” is the fourth track on Taylor’s tenth studio album, Midnights (2022). It is about falling in love with someone at the same time as they’re falling in love with you. For the only collaboration on the album, Taylor is joined by American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey under the production of Jack Antonoff, a mutual and frequent collaborator of the two.

Background and Release

Taylor announced the song on October 7, 2022, on her “Midnights Mayhem With Me” series on TikTok. Five days later she uploaded an Instagram Reel to her profile, explaining the meaning behind “Snow On The Beach”:

«'Snow On The Beach' is about falling in love with someone at the same time as they’re falling in love with you, sort of in this cataclysmic, fated moment where you realize someone feels exactly the same way that you feel. And you're kind of looking around, going, 'Wait, is this real? Is this a dream?' Kind of like it would be if you were to see snow falling on a beach.»

Actor and friend Dylan O’Brien, who starred in Taylor’s All Too Well (The Short Film) is credited for playing the drums in this song.

Collaboration With Lana Del Rey

For the only collaboration on Midnights, Taylor is joined by Lana Del Rey. After Jack Antonoff won the award for “Producer of the Year” at the 64th Grammy Awards in early 2022, Lana congratulated him on Instagram and shared a photo of the producer next to her and Taylor that sparked rumors of the two singers working together, a much anticipated duet among fans.

Taylor had previously expressed her appreciation for Lana’s work, referring to her as one of her “favorite artists of the [2010’s]” as well as “one of the most influential artists in pop” during her “Woman of the Decade” acceptance speech at Billboard’s Women In Music 2019 event. When talking about “Snow On The Beach” on Instagram, Taylor once again praised Lana’s artistry, saying:

«Lana Del Rey, in my opinion, is one of the best musical artists ever. The fact that I get to exist at the same time as her in an honor and a privilege. And the fact that she would be so generous as to collaborate with us on this song is something I'm gonna be grateful for for life. Absolutely love her!»

Commercial Performance

In the United States, songs from Midnights occupied the entire Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100; a historic feat. “Snow On The Beach” debuted at No. 4 on the chart. Taylor became the first artist to simultaneously occupy the Top 10 spots of the Hot 100; the female artist with the most Top 10 songs (40); and the first act to occupy the entire Top 10 of the Hot 100, Streaming Songs, and Digital Songs charts simultaneously. Midnights also became the first album in history to contain ten Top 10 songs.

Lyrics

[Verse 1: Taylor Swift]
One night a few moons ago
I saw flecks of what could’ve been lights
But it might just have been you
Passing by unbeknownst to me
Life is emotionally abusive
And time can’t stop me quite like you did
And my flight was awful, thanks for asking
I’m unglued, thanks to you

[Chorus: Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift & Lana Del Rey]
And it’s like snow at the beach
Weird, but fuckin’ beautiful
Flying in a dream
Stars by the pocketful
You wanting me tonight, feels impossible
But it’s coming down, no sound, it’s all around

[Post-Chorus: Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey & Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey]
Like snow on the beach
Like snow on the beach
Like snow on the beach
Like snow, oh, oh

[Verse 2: Taylor Swift & Lana Del Rey]
This scene feels like what I once saw on a screen
I searched ‘aurora borealis green’
I’ve never seen someone lit from within
Blurring out my periphery
My smile is like I won a contest
And to hide that would be so dishonest
And it’s fine to fake it ’til you make it
Till you do
Till it’s true

[Chorus: Taylor Swift & Lana Del Rey]
Now it’s like snow at the beach
Weird but fuckin’ beautiful
Flying in a dream
Stars by the pocketful
You wanting me tonight, feels impossible
But it’s coming down, no sound, it’s all around

[Post-Chorus: Taylor Swift & Lana Del Rey, Lana Del Rey]
Like snow on the beach
Like snow on the beach
Like snow on the beach
Like snow, oh, oh

[Bridge: Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift & Lana Del Rey]
I (I) can’t (Can’t) speak, afraid to jinx it
I (I) don’t (Don’t) even dare to wish it
But your eyes are flying saucers from another planet
Now I’m all for you like Janet
Can this be your real thing, can it?

[Chorus: Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift & Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift]
Are we falling like snow at the beach? (Snow at the beach)
Weird but fuckin’ beautiful
Flying in a dream (Flying in a dream)
Stars by the pocket full
You wanting me (You wantin’ me) tonight, feels impossible
But it’s comin’ down, no sound, it’s all around

[Post-Chorus: Taylor Swift & Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift]
Like snow on the beach (Snow on the beach)
Like snow on the beach (Snow on the beach)
Like snow on the beach (Snow on the beach)
Like snow, oh
But it’s comin’ down, no sound, it’s all around

[Outro: Taylor Swift]
Like snow on the beach
(It’s comin’ down, it’s comin’ down)
(It’s comin’ down, it’s comin’ down)
Like snow on the beach
(It’s comin’ down, it’s comin’ down)
(It’s comin’ down, it’s comin’ down)
(It’s comin’ down, it’s comin’ down)
(It’s comin’ down, it’s comin’ down)
(It’s comin’ down, it’s comin’ down)
(It’s comin’ down, it’s comin’ down)
