The 1989 World Tour Live

Concert Film | December 20, 2015

Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, The 1989 World Tour Live concert film documented the seven-month worldwide trek of Taylor’s fourth headlining tour, “The 1989 World Tour“, in 2015. It was released on December 20, 2015, exclusively via Apple Music.
Taylor announced the film on December 13, 2015, only one day after “The 1989 World Tour” came to an end in Melbourne, Australia. Even though it was her 26th birthday, she seemed to be in the giving mood. On her website and Twitter she revealed that “The 1989 World Tour Live” would launch on Apple Music on December 20th. It wouldn’t be made available for purchase, but it was free for Apple Music subscribers. Taylor tweeted:

«Thank you so much for all the birthday wishes. I have a little surprise for you. #1989WorldTourLIVE»

Background and Release

In 2014, Taylor released her fifth studio album, 1989. It was a massive commercial success, debuting atop the Billboard 200, retaining the position for eleven non-consecutive weeks, and becoming only the fifth album in history to spend its first year in the Top 10 of the chart and topping the 2015 Year-End Chart.

In May 2015, Taylor embarked on her fourth headlining concert tour, “The 1989 World Tour.” It was highly commercially successful, grossing over $250 million in total. The Sydney stop of the tour, which was being filmed, was attended by 76,000 fans and was one of Taylor’s most attended concerts to date.

The movie captures Taylor’s entire concert at ANZ Stadium in Sydney, Australia. The show, which had an audience of 75,980 fans, is one of her most attended concerts to date. Apart from Taylor’s performance, the film also includes exclusive clips, never-seen-before interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of the production of the tour. Additionally, snippets of Taylor performing with fellow celebrities such as Lorde, Mick Jagger and The Weeknd at other venues were included. In the trailer for the film, Taylor said:

«Getting ready for this, I wondered about a lot of things. I wondered what it would be like to perform for 70,000 people. I wondered what would happen if I invited the most amazing artists in the world to come out with me and perform on my stage – would they do it? This is The 1989 World Tour

Clips from the film were later compiled for the music video for the seventh and final single from the album, “New Romantics“.
