Background and Production

It was announced in January 2020 that David O. Russell would write and direct an untitled film starring Christian Bale for New Regency, with filming expected to begin that April. Margot Robbie and Michael B. Jordan were cast in February. Additionally, Jennifer Lawrence had been considered for Robbie’s role, while Jamie Foxx was considered for Jordan’s. Angelina Jolie passed on a role while Michael Shannon, Mike Myers and Robert De Niro were in talks to join the cast.In October, John David Washington joined the cast, replacing Jordan who dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, with filming delayed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Filming began in January 2021 in Los Angeles, with Rami Malek, Zoe Saldaña, De Niro, Myers, Timothy Olyphant, Shannon, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Alessandro Nivola being added to the cast. In June, Taylor was revealed as part of the cast.

Filming wrapped in March 2021.

Premise

Led by John David Washington, Margot Robbie and Christian Bale, the period piece was described as an “original romantic crime epic,” according to Disney executive Tony Chambers, who presented the film to the convention of American movie theater owners on April 27, 2022.

Amsterdam occupies a quirky and mysterious world in the 1930s, where the leading trio of Bale, Robbie and Washington “find themselves at the center of one of the most secret plots in American history.”

Taylor surfaces as the mourning daughter Liz Meekins, breaking down into tears before her father’s body as Rock looks on. “You have a dead white man in a box. It’s not even a coffin, it has no lid,” Rock says as Taylor sobs. “You know who’s going to get in trouble? The Black men.”
