S. Eliot. The film was directed by Tom Hooper, from a screenplay by Lee Hall and Hooper. It was widely criticized by critics and audiences for its visual effects, editing, cat design, acting performances, plot and screenplay, with some considering it one of the worst films ever made. In February 2016, it was reported that Tom Hooper was in negotiations to direct the film. In January 2018, Hooper and Working Title began officially casting for the film, while looking into the technical aspect of whether the film would be entirely live-action or computer generated, with Lloyd Webber announcing he would be writing a new song for the film adaptation. On October 24, 2019, it was announced that the new song was titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/taylorswiftswitzerland.ch\/index.php\/standalone-singles\/beautiful-ghosts\/\">Beautiful Ghosts<\/a>\u201c, written by Lloyd Webber and Taylor. The song was sung by Francesca Hayward, followed later in a reprise by Judi Dench, with a credits version sung by Taylor (her version was released on November 15, 2019).\n<br><br>\nIn July 2018, Jennifer Hudson, Taylor, James Corden, and Ian McKellen joined the cast. Taylor had previously tested for the role of \u00c9ponine in Tom Hooper\u2019s <em>Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/em> (2012) but was given the part of Bombalurina without an audition.\n<br><br>\nPrincipal photography began on December 12, 2018, and wrapped on April 2, 2019. Taylor said that the cast attended \u201ccat school\u201d, in which \u201cWe would literally do hours on end of barefoot crawling on the floor, hissing at each other. The recordings were created partly at Abbey Road Studios with contributions from the London Symphony Orchestra. Wells also played a number of instruments on the music himself, including the drums, pipe organ, bass guitar and Abbey Road\u2019s fabled Mrs Mills piano, used in Beatles songs such as \u201cPenny Lane\u201d and \u201cWith a Little Help from My Friends\u201d. Less than two months before the film was scheduled to be released in theatres, production was still ongoing for the music in the film. The song \u201cBeautiful Ghosts\u201d by Taylor, a single from the soundtrack album, was released on November 15, 2019. The film\u2019s original release contained numerous CGI errors and glitches, such as one scene in which Judi Dench\u2019s human hand, complete with her wedding ring, appears instead of Old Deuteronomy\u2019s cat paw. After poor reviews, Universal notified cinemas on opening day that an updated Digital Cinema Package with \u201csome improved visual effects\u201d would be available for download on 22 December, urging them to replace the current print as soon as possible. Studio executives and cinema owners said that the decision to release a modified version of a film already in wide release was \u201cunheard of\u201d.\n<br><br>\n<em>Cats<\/em> grossed $27.2 million in the United States and Canada, and $47.4 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $74.6 million against a production budget of about $95 million. <em>Deadline Hollywood<\/em> calculated the net loss of the film to be $113.6 million.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3706127 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3706127\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Critical Reception<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f1c9c8c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f1c9c8c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe review aggregator website <em>Rotten Tomatoes<\/em> reported that 19% of critics gave the film a positive review based on 328 reviews, with an average rating of 3.9\/10. The site\u2019s critics consensus reads: \u201cDespite its fur-midable cast, this Cats adaptation is a clawful mistake that will leave most viewers begging to be put out of their mew-sery.\u201d In June 2021, an editorial titled \u201cRotten Tomatoes is Wrong about <em>Cats<\/em>\u201c, they asked if the film was shaping up to be a \u201ccult classic in the making\u201d.\n<br><br>\nPete Hammond of <em>Deadline<\/em> complimented Taylor\u2019s performance as Bombalurina and her signature \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/taylorswiftswitzerland.ch\/index.php\/features\/macavity\/\">Macavity<\/a>\u201d number, as well as \u201cBeautiful Ghosts.\u201d <em>Critic Guy Lodge<\/em> called Taylor \u201cthe best thing in the film\u201d and \u201cthe one performer who completely hits their marks and pulls off the lone successful number,\u201d while critic Rebecca Lewis described Taylor\u2019s performance as \u201cone of the few genuinely good parts of the film.\u201d Patrick Ryan of <em>USA Today<\/em> stated that Taylor \u201cmakes the most of her brief screen time, bringing her unabating charisma to the flirtatious feline \u2026 if there\u2019s one thing that\u2019s disappointing about Swift\u2019s performance, it\u2019s that there isn\u2019t more of it.\u201d Hans said that she was the only actor \u201cwho seems to be having fun, perhaps because she only appears in the film for approximately 10 minutes.\u201d Jennifer Hudson similarly received praise for her rendition of \u201cMemory\u201d, with some critics describing it as \u201cthe best part\u201d of the film and \u201cthe sole musical number in the new movie that summons real feeling.\u201d\n<br><br>\nLloyd Webber himself was critical of the film, calling it \u201cridiculous\u201d in an interview with <em>The Sunday Times<\/em>, saying, \u201cThe problem with the film was that Tom Hooper decided that he didn\u2019t want anybody involved in it who was involved in the original show.\u201d He later revealed in an interview with <em>The Daily Telegraph<\/em> that \u201cI wrote to the head of Universal and said, \u2018You\u2019ve got a car crash on your hands unless you get a grip on this thing\u2019, a year before they made (it). I didn\u2019t even get a reply.\u201d In a 2021 interview with <em>Variety<\/em>, Lloyd Webber said that working with Taylor is the only good memory he has of the film. And although some sources disagree on the exact amount she earned for portraying Bombalurina, some say it was at least $3 million.
