That is a designation she has proven she cares about. She can make hundreds of millions touring as an A-list performer, but it still makes sense that a prodigiously talented young woman who was written off for years on the basis of her diaristic songwriting and frivolous interest in glitter would transition into adult pop stardom in part on a platform of business savvy and semi-empowering rhetoric about the value of her own labor. Before officially pulling her music from streaming services, she wrote in a now-infamous essay for <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> from July 2014:\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-17a1142 elementor-blockquote--align-left elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"17a1142\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\u00abMusic is art, and art is important and rare. Her first five <a href=\"https:\/\/taylorswiftswitzerland.ch\/index.php\/albums\/\">albums<\/a> weren\u2019t available from November 2014 to July 2017. She explained her decision, saying: \u201cAll I can say is that music is changing so quickly, and the landscape of the music industry itself is changing so quickly, that everything new, like Spotify, all feels to me a bit like a grand experiment. And I\u2019m not willing to contribute my life\u2019s work to an experiment that I don\u2019t feel fairly compensates the writers, producers, artists, and creators of this music. And I just don\u2019t agree with perpetuating the perception that music has no value and should be free\u2026 I thought, \u2018I will try this; I\u2019ll see how it feels.\u2019 It didn\u2019t feel right to me.\u201d\n<br><br>\nTaylor\u2019s move of removing her music from the platform was a huge loss for Spotify. Executives tried winning her back by writing her a pun-filled public note and promoting a playlist called \u201cWhat to Play While Taylor\u2019s Away,\u201d convinced that she would come back quickly. She didn\u2019t.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-481f130 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"481f130\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Spotify Begged Her to Return<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5f14463 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5f14463\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTaylor stood by her decision for three years. In the meantime, she promoted Spotify\u2019s main competitor, <a href=\"https:\/\/taylorswiftswitzerland.ch\/index.php\/wiki\/brand-deals\/apple-music\/\">Apple Music<\/a>, who compensates artists more fairly. It was only in June 2017 when her entire catalogue was once again made available on Spotify. It was a \u201cThank You\u201d to her fans after her fifth album, <a href=\"https:\/\/taylorswiftswitzerland.ch\/index.php\/albums\/1989-album\/\"><em>1989<\/em><\/a> (2014) crossed the 10 million sales mark worldwide. Following the news, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek appeared on<em> CBS This Morning<\/em> in late 2017 and touched upon the \u201cTaylor vs. Spotify\u201d saga:\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-382b338 elementor-blockquote--align-left elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"382b338\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\u00abI should\u2019ve done a much better job communicating this, so I take full ownership for that. I went to Nashville many, many times to talk to [Taylor\u2019s] team, spent more time explaining the model, why streaming mattered. And the great news is I think she saw how streaming was growing. I think she saw the fans were asking for it.
