\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTaylor began working on Lover<\/em> during a week in New York in July 2018 while still on the \u201creputation Stadium Tour<\/a>,\u201d before the album\u2019s main recording sessions began after the tour concluded that November. \u201cI Forgot That You Existed\u201d emerged during the making of an album Taylor approached from a markedly different creative place than its predecessor, reputation<\/a><\/em> (2017). In an interview with Vogue<\/em> in summer 2019, she described Lover<\/em> as a \u201cnew beginning\u201d and a \u201clove letter to love, in all of its maddening, passionate, exciting, enchanting, horrific, tragic, wonderful glory,\u201d recalling that she wrote from an \u201copen, free, romantic, whimsical place.\u201d\n

\n\u201cI Forgot That You Existed\u201d was written by Taylor, Louis Bell, and Adam King Feeney (Frank Dukes), with the trio also collaborating on \u201cAfterglow<\/a>,\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s Nice to Have a Friend<\/a>,\u201d \u201cAll Of The Girls You Loved Before<\/a>\u201d and \u201cNeed<\/a>.\u201d Taylor brought the song to the writing session with Bell and Dukes, neither of whom she had worked with before, already largely formed. I thought it might be a really fun way to open the album, like, basically kind of shrugging off a lot of things that you\u2019ve been through that have been causing a lot of struggle and pain. She described the stadium tour as the most transformative emotional experience of her career, saying it had left her in the healthiest and most balanced place she had ever been: “After that tour, bad stuff can happen to me, but it doesn’t level me anymore. The stuff that happened a couple of months ago with Scott [Borchetta]<\/a> would have leveled me three years ago and silenced me. I would have been too afraid to speak up. Something about that tour made me disengage from some part of public perception I used to hang my entire identity on, which I now know is incredibly unhealthy.”\n

\n\u201cI Forgot That You Existed\u201d was released on August 23, 2019, as the opening track on Lover<\/em>.
