Diary of Me

Unreleased | 2004

“Diary of Me” is one of Taylor’s numerous unreleased songs, recorded before the debut of her 2006 album, Taylor Swift. Interestingly, the track wasn’t written by her but by Nicholas Brohpy and Julie Wood-Vassar. It could easily be mistaken for Taylor’s own work, though. Metaphorically, “Diary of Me” refers to songwriting as her literal diary, readable to anyone who listens.

Background and Lyrical Theme

The song was written by Nicholas Brophy and Julie Wood-Vassar. Taylor knew them both and co-wrote another one of her unreleased songs, “Permanent Marker“, with Brophy around the same time. At some point, he asked her to record vocals for “Diary of Me” to see how it sounded. A fan on online messaged him about it and he confirmed it. That’s probably why the song was never seriously considered for any album of Taylor’s — because she didn’t write it.

Nicholas (Nick) Brophy is an accomplished American mixer, sound engineer, record producer and songwriter. Apart from Taylor, notable artists he has collaborated with and written for include the Rolling Stones, Avril Lavigne, Hootie & the Blowfish, Kenny Chesney, and Carly Simon.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I’m a laid back
T-shirt, blue jean, mood ring kinda girl
Hey, yeah
What’s the word on you?
Lay low
I’m a mission rebel, angel, devil
Little left of the middle
Sometimes I get temperamental

[Chorus]
But here I am
An open book
Turn the page
It’s all the rage
Get a look on the inside
What you get is what you see
Baby, you hold the key
To the diary of me

[Verse 2]
I’m poetry
Complicated, simply stated
Hey, yeah
Baby, how about you?
I was born free
I’m a cellphone hippie
Are you with me?
When I mess up I don’t get up
I just get down, yeah

[Chorus]
But here I am
An open book
Turn the page
It’s all the rage
Get a look on the inside
What you get is what you see
Baby, you hold the key
To the diary of me

[Bridge]
It’s raining on Sunday
There’s nothing on TV
Yesterday was lonely
You’re the only one who gets me
My mind is like an island
Drifting through the ocean
I can’t stop thinking about you
I bet you’re thinking of me too

[Chorus]
Well, here I am
An open book
Turn the page
It’s all the rage
Get a look on the inside
What you get is what you see
Baby, you hold the key
To the diary of me

[Final Chorus]
Yeah, here I am
An open book
Turn the page
It’s all the rage
Get a look on the inside
What you get is what you see
Baby, you hold the key
To the diary of me
