I'd Lie

Unreleased | 2006

“I’d Lie” is one of Taylor’s numerous unreleased songs. She wrote it about her crush during sophomore year of high school. She eventually performed the song at her high school talent show, like she did with her first hit, “Our Song“.
Due to misinformation on Wikipedia, for a while there was a wide misconception surrounding the release status of “I’d Lie.” It was assumed that the song was an exclusive download accompanying copies of Taylor’s debut album, if purchased at Best Buy during its first week of release in 2006. However, the track that was actually included in the packaging was “I Heart ?” instead of “I’d Lie.”

Background and Lyrical Theme

On the 2006 GAC Shortcuts TV special Taylor Swift: A Place In This World, Taylor said she had a crush on one of her guy friends during her sophomore year of high school. He didn’t notice that she liked him, so she wrote “I’d Lie” about the situation and decided to play it for her friends around a campfire to see what they thought of it. They loved it, so she performed the song at her high school talent show that year, knowing that her crush was going to be in the audience. Taylor told GAC Shortcuts:

«I like a boy, and he's one of my best friends. And I think so many people have a problem with that: They become friends with someone because they want to get close to them and then they're stuck in the 'friend zone.' It's kind of sad but I write a lot of good songs, having that little muse in my life. I really think this guy's just oblivious. How do you not know?»

After the song first gained popularity with her high school friends, Taylor also sang “I’d Lie” on GAC Shortcuts and Billboard Live in 2006. The song still never was given album treatment, likely because another band claimed she had lifted the melody from them. Taylor probably decided to drop the song from her debut album tracklist after that, although there are some videos out there where she’s trying to change the melody to the song.

Almost on Fearless

In late 2007, “I’d Lie” was in contention to be track three for a temporary Fearless tracklist. Other songs included on the shortlist included “Permanent Marker,” “Tell Me Why,” “Fearless,” “Dark Blue Tennessee,” “Sparks Fly” and “Bye Bye Baby” (which was originally called “The One Thing”).

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I don’t think that passenger seat
Has ever looked this good to me
He tells me about his night
And I count the colors in his eyes
He’ll never fall in love, he swears
As he runs his fingers through his hair
I’m laughing ’cause I hope he’s wrong
And I don’t think it ever crossed his mind
He tells a joke, I fake a smile
But I know all his favorite songs

[Chorus]
And I could tell you his favorite color’s green
He loves to argue, born on the seventeenth
His sister’s beautiful, he has his father’s eyes
And if you asked me if I love him
I’d lie

[Verse 2]
He looks around the room
Innocently overlooks the truth
Shouldn’t a light go on?
Doesn’t he know that I’ve had him memorized for so long?
He sees everything in black and white
Never let nobody see him cry
I don’t let nobody see me wishin’ he was mine

[Chorus]
I could tell you his favorite color’s green
He loves to argue, born on the seventeenth
His sister’s beautiful, he has his father’s eyes
And if you asked me if I love him
I’d lie

[Bridge]
He stands there, then walks away
My God, if I could only say
I’m holding every breath for you
He’d never tell you, but he can play guitar
I think he can see through everything but my heart
First thought when I wake up
Is, “My God, he’s beautiful”
So I put on my makeup
And pray for a miracle

[Chorus]
Yes, I could tell you his favorite color’s green
He loves to argue, oh, and it kills me
His sister’s beautiful, he has his father’s eyes
And if you asked me if I love him
If you asked me if I love him
I’d lie
