Background and Lyrical Theme

One day, a computer repairman showed Taylor how to play her first three chords (C, D and G) on the guitar. That night, Taylor wrote her first song, “Lucky You.” She told The Hot Desk in 2009:

«The first song that I really finished, and I think there’s a really old, horrifying demo of it floating around on the internet, because naturally there would be, it’s called ‘Lucky You.’ It was this song I wrote about a girl who’s different than everybody else, and she’s unique, and she, like, sings her own song, and she goes her own way, and she knows she’s different. […] It was very twelve [year-old], it was very uplifting, and it’s inspirational and sugarcoated. I look back on it and I sounded like a little chipmunk singing back then, like so sweet. […] It’s the kind of things fans show up at venues and they have, like, the little CD that I used to hand out at my little karaoke shows, like when I would play at little festivals and fairs, or, like garden club meetings and I’d be like, ‘Hi! Here’s my CD,’ you know? ‘I’ll pay you to listen to it! You don’t even have to buy it, I’ll give it to you!’ People show up with those CDs now at the shows and they’re like, ‘Will you sign this? You signed it when you were twelve.’ And I’m, like, [Sighs.]»

The song is said to have been inspired by Taylor’s maternal grandmother, Marjorie Finlay. Years later, she wrote her a different song, simply calling it “marjorie.” It appears on her ninth studio album, evermore (2020).

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
There’s a little girl in this little town
With a little too much heart to go around
Live forever, never say never
You could do better, that’s what she says

[Chorus]
Mama named her Lucky on a starlit night
A rabbit foot in her pocket, she dances in spite
Of the fact that she’s different
And yet she’s the same
And she says, “do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do
Do-do-do-do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do
Do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do-do
Lucky you, lucky you”

[Verse 2]
She sings her little song, she walks along
A little pathway headed for the skies
Left to travels, lives they unravel
Mind over matter, that’s what she says

[Chorus]
Mama named her Lucky on a starlit night
A rabbit foot in her pocket, she dances in spite
Of the fact that she’s different
And yet she’s the same
And she says, “do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do
Do-do-do-do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do
Do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do-do
Lucky you, lucky you”

[Bridge]
Maybe she’ll sing you do-do-do-do
Maybe she’ll bring you into the skies
Honey she’ll love you, funny how some view
Angels above you aren’t so far away

[Chorus]
Mama named her Lucky on a starlit night
A rabbit foot in her pocket, she dances in spite
Of the fact that she’s different
And yet she’s the same
And she says, “lucky you, lucky you”
