Background and Lyrical Theme

When Taylor was under contract with Sony she recorded a group of songs, one of them being “Ten Dollars and a Six Pack”. The track was written by Taylor, Brian Maher and Liz Rose. Brian also co-wrote Taylor’s unreleased songs “Who I’ve Always Been,” “Sweet Tea and God’s Graces,” and “Rain Song,” as well as “Mary’s Song (Oh My My My)“, which appears on her self-titled debut album (2006). Liz went on to become her most trusted songwriting partner during the first stage of her career.

Lyrically, the song features someone Taylor’s fallen for, but her infatuation falls on deaf ears when she talks of him to her family and friends. She still goes out with him and it turns out everyone was right: He was bad news.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You were what I wanted
When I wanted what I just couldn’t have
You were country loving
Really something for three months and a half
Everybody said that you were bad news
But, baby, I was betting on you

[Chorus]
So I guess I owe my friends ten dollars and a six pack
Got myself a big country serving of payback
I guess I’m gonna have to listen to my mama’s, “I told you so”
But you ain’t worth all that
Ten dollars and a six pack

[Verse 2]
I said, “Let them say we’re crazy”
You said, “Let’s go fishing tonight”
The midnight moon was blazing, baby
I was looking into your eyes
Everything changed when you took me to town
Caught you staring every other girl down

[Chorus]
So I guess I owe my friends ten dollars and a six pack
Got myself a big country serving of payback
I guess I’m gonna have to listen to my mama’s, “I told you so”
But you ain’t worth all that
Ten dollars and a six pack

[Bridge]
Can’t believe the time you lost me
Can’t believe what it cost me

[Final Chorus]
I owe my friends ten dollars and a six pack
Got myself a big country serving of payback
Had to go and listen to my mama’s, “I told you so”
You ain’t never been through that
You ain’t worth all that
Ten dollars and a six pack
You ain’t worth all that
Ten dollars and a six pack
