Cleveland!

The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore | September 25, 2026

“Cleveland!” is the fourteenth track on the deluxe edition of Taylor’s twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore (2026). Co-written by Taylor, Max Martin and Shellback, the song celebrates the security of finding a partner who loves her despite public judgement, with its lyrics referencing Travis Kelce’s hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. It was released on September 25, 2026, alongside the other three new songs on The Encore.
“Cleveland!” is the first song Taylor released after her engagement and wedding to explicitly reference her getting married. In the final verse, she sings about wearing white, making the song the first to directly acknowledge her then-upcoming wedding and the next chapter of her relationship.

Background and Announcement

“Cleveland!” originated as part of an unexpected return to the studio rather than as material Taylor had planned for The Life of a Showgirl. After the album’s record-breaking release in October 2025, Taylor travelled back to Sweden to celebrate its success with Max Martin and Shellback, the two collaborators with whom she had created the original album. The trip was initially intended as an opportunity to reflect on what they had accomplished, but with a studio available, the three began writing again. Taylor later described the four resulting songs as having been “born out of pure gratitude” for the response to the album:

«About a year ago, you guys did a truly unfathomable thing. Something that completely blew my mind… You gave The Life of a Showgirl the biggest first week for an album in history. I took a trip to Sweden to celebrate with Max and Shellback, my two collaborators on this album. Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs. I hope you love them, because they were born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made. The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore including four new songs is out on Friday.»

The additional material was particularly unexpected because Taylor had previously presented The Life of a Showgirl as a completed 12-song project. Rather than being leftovers from the original recording sessions, “Patient Zero,” “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon” were newly written during the Swedish sessions, making The Encore a continuation of the project created almost a year after the original album was released.

“Cleveland!” was announced on September 23, 2026, alongside The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore and the other three new songs. The expanded edition was released on September 25, with “Patient Zero” serving as its lead single and “Cleveland!” appearing as the fourteenth track. The title refers directly to Cleveland Heights, Ohio, where Taylor’s husband, Travis Kelce, grew up.

Lyrical Theme

The central theme of “Cleveland!” is the security of being loved by one person despite the judgement of everyone else. Taylor opens the song by reciting a series of criticisms aimed at her appearance, personality and public image, only to dismiss them with the knowledge that her partner loves her regardless of what others think. The contrast between the anonymous “they” of the verses and the affectionate “my baby” of the chorus turns the song into a playful celebration of private acceptance over public approval.

The song’s Cleveland setting makes that idea more intimate. Taylor references Travis Kelce taking her to Cleveland and showing her The Heights, the area where he grew up, transforming his hometown into a symbol of being welcomed into his personal world. Rather than presenting their relationship as something that needs to be defended or explained to outsiders, she focuses on the ordinary intimacy of being invited into someone else’s history and finding a sense of belonging there.

The bridge brings the song’s message into sharper focus by suggesting that a person only needs to find one person who truly accepts them. By the final chorus, the relationship has progressed to marriage, rendering the criticism that dominates the opening verses almost irrelevant: Taylor has found the person whose opinion matters to her, and the outside world no longer gets a say. In this sense, “Cleveland!” is less a song about answering her critics than about reaching a point where their judgement has lost its power.

Production

The production of “Cleveland!” combines bright keyboard textures, programmed drums and layered vocals to create a glossy, theatrical pop sound. Its playful, larger-than-life arrangement fits naturally into the showgirl aesthetic of The Life of a Showgirl, giving the song the feel of a cheeky stage number built around Taylor’s unapologetic celebration of love.

Critical Reception

The critical reception to “Cleveland!” has been notably divided. Variety praised its unabashedly cheerful take on marital bliss and its playful, goofy energy, while The Times singled it out as the strongest of the four new songs. The Los Angeles Times was more ambivalent, finding its airy jangle-pop production appealing but considering its portrayal of Taylor’s relationship as a response to public criticism somewhat uninspired.

Other critics were considerably less receptive. Pitchfork criticised the song’s defensive focus on online commentary and found its production overly theatrical, while Business Insider argued that its highly specific references lacked the finesse of Taylor’s earlier songs about public perception. The Guardian similarly objected to its self-satisfied tone and repeated fixation on its detractors.

Commercial Performance

As an album track on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, “Cleveland!” was not released as the project’s promoted single, making its early commercial performance less directly documented than that of “Patient Zero.” The song nevertheless showed early demand on digital sales charts. Further chart and streaming data are expected to provide a clearer picture of the song’s commercial performance in the weeks following its release.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
She’s not as hot as she was, but she was only a four
She was never a girls’ girl, she was just a—
And with all of that money, why’s she dressed like trash?
When she smiles, it’s annoying, and have you seen her

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Stumbling clumsily?
Would you even call that dancing?
I can see what you mean
And now I guess there’s something we all can agree on

[Chorus]
But my baby likes what he likes
He already took me to Cleveland
And showed me The Heights
So hate all you like
This is the love of my life

[Verse 2]
The taste of me is acquired, but it’s his favorite dish
He says I look like an angel, they say, “I hate that—” (Bi—)
There, that house with the porch is where he lived as a kid
He’s been saying forever
Must not have read that scathing take about how I’m fake

[Pre-Chorus 2]
And he could find someone younger
I can see what they mean
And now I guess there’s something we all can agree on

[Chorus]
But my baby likes what he likes
He already took me to Cleveland
And he showed me The Heights
So hate all you like
This is the love of my life

[Post-Chorus]
He likes what he likes, what he likes
And he likes me
He likes what he likes, what he likes
And he likes me

[Bridge]
You only need to find one person in this entire world
Who doesn’t find you completely insufferable
And I have an important announcement to make
I found mine
Well, I found mine
Yeah, I found mine

[Final Chorus]
Yes, that’s something we all can agree on
But my baby likes what he likes
He already took me to Cleveland
Now I’m wearing white
So hate all you like
This is the love of my life
