Gasoline

Women In Music Part. III (HAIM Album) | 2021

Off of HAIM’s 2020 album Women In Music Pt. III, “Gasoline” is a sensual song about a possibly-dysfunctional relationship. Taylor is featured on the remix of the track which was released on February 19, 2021.
The “Gasoline” remix marks the returning of a favor, or reversal of a spotlight, since HAIM made a featured appearance on Taylor’s evermore album in December 2020. With HAIM taking on backing vocals, that number, “no body, no crime,” was a light-hearted murder ballad that harked back to Taylor’s country days and had a main character, Este, named after one of the Haim sisters.

Background and Release

The three sisters teased fans with a potential team-up with Taylor earlier in the week, before eagle-eyed fans spotted she was credited on a new version of the track “Gasoline” on a page on ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), a service songwriters use to register their material for royalty payments. Regarding the remix with Taylor, the sisters wrote on their Instagram:

«Since we released Women In Music Part. III in June, Taylor had always told us that 'Gasoline' was her favorite. So when we were thinking about ways to reimagine some of the tracks from the record, we immediately thought of her. She brought such amazing ideas and new imagery to the song and truly gave it a new life. Thank you Taylor, for adding your incredible voice and spirit to a track that means so much to us.»

HAIM
Taylor and HAIM first linked when Taylor invited the sisters to open 17 dates on her “The 1989 World Tour” in 2015.

Live Performance

On July 21, 2022, Taylor joined HAIM on their final show of their “One More HAIM Tour” at the O2 Arena in London to sing a mashup of “Gasoline” and “Love Story.” It marked the first official live performance of the “Gasoline” remix version and Taylor’s first time performing at a concert since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. “I haven’t been on stage for a long time, it’s nice to be back,” she told the crowd.

Lyrics

[Verse 1: HAIM]
You took me back, but you shouldn’t have
Now it’s your fault if I mess around
I took a drag, but I shouldn’t have
Now I’m coughing up like I never smoked a pack

[Chorus: HAIM]
Gasoline, pretty please
I want to get off
But you’re such a tease
Throw the keys back to me
Go on and kick off your boots
In the passenger seat

[Verse 2: Taylor Swift]
I get sad, you know I get sad
And I can’t look past what I’m sad about
You did me bad (Did me bad, did me bad)
And I did it back (Did it back, did it back)
You needed ass, well
What’s wrong with that?

[Chorus: HAIM & Taylor Swift]
Gasoline (Gasoline), pretty please (Pretty please)
I want to get off (Gasoline)
But you’re such a tease
Throw the keys (Throw the keys) back to me (Back to me)
Go on and kick off your boots (Gasoline)
In the passenger seat

[Bridge: HAIM, Taylor Swift, HAIM & Taylor Swift]
Strike a match, strike a match, watch it blow
We’re watching the sunrise from the kitchen counter
Want you bad, want you bad, don’t you know?
When you lie in between my legs, it doesn’t matter
Strike a match, strike a match, watch it blow
You say you wanna go slower but I wanna go faster
Want you bad, want you bad, don’t you know?
Faster and faster

[Outro: HAIM]
Gasoline, pretty please
I want to get off
But you’re such a tease
