“Drops of Jupiter” is a song written by American rock band Train. Taylor performed it during a 2011 concert at the HP Pavilion in San Jose and later released it on her live album Speak Now: World Tour Live. The record consists of songs and performances recorded on various tour dates around the world from her “Speak Now World Tour“.

Background and Lyrical Theme

Though this song can be interpreted in a number of different ways, Train’s lead singer Pat Monahan explained in a VH-1 interview that the song was inspired by the death of his mother, who battled lung cancer for many years. The opening lines “came to [him] in a dream”. He said, “The process of creation wasn’t easy. I just couldn’t figure out what to write, but then I woke up from a dream about a year after my mother passed away with the words ‘back in the atmosphere…It was just her way of saying what it was like – she was swimming through the planets and came to me with drops of Jupiter in her hair.”
