Sweet Escape

Gwen Stefani Cover | Bonus Track | Speak Now: World Tour Live (2011)

“Sweet Escape” is a song written by American singer Gwen Stefani. Taylor performed it during a 2011 concert at Staples Centre in Los Angeles and later released it as a bonus track on the Target edition of her live album Speak Now: World Tour Live. The record consists of songs and performances recorded on various tour dates around the world from her “Speak Now World Tour“.

Background and Lyrical Theme

“The Sweet Escape” is an apology for a fight between two lovers and describes a dream of a pleasant life for them.

Akon, who is also a featured artist, developed the song’s beat before collaborating with Gwen Stefani. He designed it based on her previous work with her band No Doubt, and Stefani later commented that it put her “on the yellow brick road to the No Doubt record I might do”.

Lyrics

Written by Giorgio Tuinfort, Akon & Gwen Stefani

[Verse 1]
If I could be sweet
I would but first of all, let me say
I must apologize for acting stank and treating you this way
Cause I’ve been acting like sour milk all on the floor
It’s your fault you didn’t shut the refrigerator
Maybe that’s the reason I’ve been acting so cold

[Chorus]
If I could escape
And recreate a place that’s my own world
And I could be your favorite girl
Forever, perfectly together
Now tell me boy now wouldn’t that be sweet?
If I could be sweet
Sorry, but I know I’ve been a real bad girl
I didn’t mean for you to get hurt whatsoever
We can make it better
Now tell me boy now wouldn’t that be sweet?
Sweet escape, sweet escape

[Verse 2]
You let me drown
I’m at my lowest boiling point
Come help me out
I need to get me out of this joint
Come on, let’s bounce
Counting on you to turn me around
Instead of clowning around
Let’s look for some common ground, oh baby
Times been getting a little crazy
I’ve been getting a little lazy
Waiting for you to come save me
I can see that you’re angry
By the way that you treat me
Hopefully, you don’t leave me
Wanna take you with me

[Chorus]
If I could escape
And recreate a place that’s my own world
And I could be your favorite girl
Forever, perfectly together
Now tell me boy now wouldn’t that be sweet?
If I could be sweet
Sorry, but I know I’ve been a real bad girl
I didn’t mean for you to get hurt whatsoever
We can make it better
Now tell me boy now wouldn’t that be sweet?
Sweet escape, sweet escape
