Drama Queen

Unreleased | 2009

“Drama Queen” is one of Taylor’s numerous unreleased songs. It was co-written by her and Martin Johnson, with whom she collaborated with on several other songs before the release of Speak Now (2010). Because it is a co-write “Drama Queen” was probably scrapped from Taylor’s third album. The song appears on her Sony registry as of January 2023. The demo leaked that March.

Background

Taylor and Martin Johnson co-wrote multiple songs; “You’ll Always Find Your Way Back Home” from the Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009) soundtrack, performed by Miley Cyrus, “Two Is Better Than One,” which features Taylor and Johnson’s band Boys Like Girls, as well as “If This Was A Movie,” one of the bonus tracks off of Speak Now.

As noted by a fan who catalogues Taylor’s unreleased tracks, “Drama Queen” first appeared on databases around June 2009, so she probably wrote the song in 2008 or early 2009: “It’s somewhat more recent than most of the others; probably a Speak Now cut. She wrote it with Martin Johnson, the lead singer of Boys Like Girls. It’s extremely rare though. I don’t think anyone has it so it’s therefore out of circulation. I don’t really know anything else about it but it was first discovered on one of her song lists in June or July 2009 I believe, so it was written sometime before that but it’s unknown exactly when.”

Lyrical Theme

“Drama Queen” is reminiscent of other fun but bitter songs Taylor wrote as a teenager, like “Better Than Revenge,” “Permanent Marker,” or “Picture to Burn.”

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Let’s break it down
I’ll take the story from the slamming of the door
Thought it was perfect for a second
Guess you weren’t quite as sure
Maybe I’m a little hard to get
Maybe you didn’t have the patience
Let’s assess the situation

[Verse 2]
That girl was biding her time
Yeah, she was waiting on your cue
So, somehow I’m not surprised
To see her standing there with you
Maybe she’s a little overdressed
And I can see the smile you’re faking
And the deep breath you’re taking

[Pre-Chorus 1]
When you see me now
You’re not looking at her
Yeah, it’s a long way down from the bridges you burned
Might wanna sit down
I’m calling you out
Right now

[Chorus]
You’re a heartbreaker
And she’s a little drama queen
I’m a little over it
And she’s still not me
So long and back to reality
But this song’s for you and your drama queen

[Verse 2]
As I was saying
I was never quite a fan of the little games
It doesn’t take too long to see that boys like you are all the same
Maybe I’m a little less obsessed
But she’s impressed
And I should mention
She’s starving for attention

[Pre-Chorus 2]
And I can see it now
How it’s all gonna be
When she freaks out
You’ll be thinking of me
‘Cause what went down is coming back around
You’ll see

[Chorus]
‘Cause you’re a heartbreaker
And she’s a little drama queen
I’m a little over it
And she’s still not me
So long and back to reality
But this song’s for you and your drama queen

[Bridge]
Sometimes you get just what you see
Like you chose her when you could’ve had me
Everything’s a mess now
Watch her little meltdown
Wish you both success and I hope you’re happy

[Chorus]
‘Cause you’re a heartbreaker
And she’s a little drama queen
I’m a little over it
And she’s still not me
So long and back to reality
But this song’s for you and your drama

[Final Chorus]
Heartbreaker
She’s a little drama queen
I’m a little over it
And she’s still not me
So long and back to reality
But this song’s for you and your drama queen

[Outro]
Oh-oh, for you and your drama queen, oh oh oh oh
You and your drama queen
Oh-oh, baby, your drama queen
