Background and Lyrical Theme

Taylor wrote “I Used to Fly” in early 2003, when she was thirteen years old and was still living in Wyomissing with her family. In one of the journal entries included in the deluxe edition notes for Taylor’s seventh studio album, Lover (2019), a diary entry from June 5, 2003, includes a mention of the song. In it, Taylor writes that she sang the song for her grandmother at the local hospital:

«After the Garden Party, we all went to the Reading Hospital to visit Nanny. She looks worse everytime we go. I sang 'I Used to Fly,' 'A Little More Like You' and 'Same Girl' for Nanny and her room mate, Penny.»

Lyrically, “I Used to Fly” explores themes of longing, vulnerability, and the need for emotional support during challenging times. It reflects the experience of someone who feels broken but yearns for reassurance and a return to a happier state of being.

Lyrics

[Verse I]
I used to fly
Didn’t matter where I’d been
‘Cause I’d seen the sky
I wanna tell you why
But somehow I know I
Would break down and cry

[Chorus]
I know you can’t see me here
But I am not alone
I’m lying here in invisible arms
And I won’t be alone tonight

[Verse 2]
You, you know I would die
Before I let them see me
See me cry
Please don’t leave tonight
Oh let me down slowly
Show me a light

[Chorus]
I know you can’t see me here
But I am not alone
I’m lying here in invisible arms
And I won’t be alone tonight

[Bridge]
Oh, let me think I’m strong
Please don’t bring me down
I need you tonight

[Chorus]
I know you can’t see me here
But I am not alone
I’m lying here in invisible arms
And I won’t be alone tonight

[Outro]
I, I used to fly
Didn’t matter where I’d been
‘Cause I’d seen the sky
