“I Hate It Here” is track twenty-three on THE ANTHOLOGY, the double album edition of Taylor’s eleventh studio album, THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT (2024). Background

Taylor released her tenth studio album, Midnights, on October 21, 2022, to widespread commercial and critical success. It was eventually nominated for six awards at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on February 4, 2024. That night, Taylor won the categories for “Best Pop Vocal Album” and “Album of the Year” for Midnights. In her acceptance speech for the former, she revealed a new studio album, titled THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, and announced its release date of April 19, 2024, which she had been keeping secret for nearly two years. Its cover artwork was subsequently posted on her social media accounts, along with a photograph of a handwritten note.

“I Hate It Here” was part of the surprise double-album, THE ANTHOLOGY, which was released on April 19, shortly after the album’s standard edition.

Lyrical Theme

“I Hate It Here” embodies a profound yearning for escape – whether literal or metaphorical. The song begins with a conversation that sets the tone of disillusionment, describing someone who appears to be a “poet trapped inside the body of a finance guy.” This metaphor suggests a conflict between one’s true desires and the roles imposed by society. The following reference to being “scared to go outside” and rejecting the idea of comfort as a construct further emphasizes an internal conflict and disillusionment with the external world.

The declaration of, “I hate it here” expresses a disillusionment with one’s surroundings or current state of being. It is a visceral cry for something beyond the confines of the present. In the chorus, Taylor reveals that she finds refuge in her own creative mind, where she controls the narrative and can find a sense of worth and peace. She sings of self-created sanctuaries like secret gardens and lunar valleys that only she herself has access to. This imagery suggests an innate need for solace and self-preservation amidst a world that feels harsh and unwelcoming.

“I Hate It Here” also touches on the concept of nostalgia and the idealization of the past, which Taylor critically examines. In the second verse, she recalls a game she used to play with friends in which they would choose another time they would have liked to live in. She says she used to pick the 1830s but acknowledges the inherent flaws and injustices of those times, such as racism and forced marriages. The inclusion of these historical issues might seem jarring at first, but it is likely intentional. By juxtaposing her initial romanticized view of said decade with its dark realities, Taylor exposes the pitfalls of nostalgia because it can create a distorted picture of “better” times. Therefore, the verse’s closing line, “Nostalgia is a mind’s trick. If I’d been there, I’d hate it,” is puncturing the fantasy and reminding listeners that escape, whether to another time or place, doesn’t solve underlying problems.

Production

Taylor co-wrote and co-produced the song with her regular songwriting partner Aaron Dessner, who produced the majority of THE ANTHOLOGY, which is the second volume of THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. Dessner, who is well-known for his work with the rock band The National and his work on Taylor’s folk-tinged albums folklore (2020) and evermore (2020), infuses “I Hate It Here” with different acoustic instruments and an intricate string arrangement. Right away, the song opens with a somber, stripped-back guitar melody, setting the stage for Taylor’s emotionally raw vocals. This limited instrumentation persists throughout the song, allowing the focus to remain on the starkness of the lyrics and her heartfelt delivery.

Live Performance

“I Hate It Here” received its first live performance acoustically on piano on June 18, 2024, in Cardiff during one of Taylor’s shows on “The Eras Tour” (2023-2024). She paired it with “the lakes” from folklore. The live audio was released on August 8, 2024. The lyrical connection to “the lakes” is noteworthy. Both songs explore themes of escape, seeking refuge, and a sense of belonging elsewhere. While “the lakes” has a wistful, romantic quality, “I Hate It Here” carries a more anguished and defiant tone, expressing a desperate desire to break free from a suffocating situation.

Commercial Performance

Upon the release of THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, “I Hate It Here” debuted at No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100, during the chart week ending on May 4, 2024.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Quick, quick
Tell me something awful
Like you are a poet trapped inside the body of a finance guy
Tell me all your secrets
All you’ll ever be is
My eternal consolation prize
You see I was a debutante in another life but
Now I seem to be scared to go outside
If comfort is a construct
I don’t believe in good luck
Now that I know what’s what

[Chorus 1]
I hate it here so I will go to
Secret gardens in my mind
People need a key to get to
The only one is mine
I read about it in a book when I was a precocious child
No mid-sized city hopes and small town fears
I’m there most of the year
Cause I hate it here
I hate it here

[Verse 2]
My friends used to play a game where
We would pick a decade
We wished we could live in instead of this
I’d say the 1830s but without all the racists and getting married off for the highest bid
Everyone would look down
Cause it wasn’t fun now
Seems like it was never even fun back then
Nostalgia is a mind’s trick
If I’d been there, I’d hate it
It was freezing in the palace

[Chorus 2]
I hate it here so I will go to
Lunar valleys in my mind
When they found a better planet
Only the gentle survived
I dreamed about it in the dark
The night I felt like I might die
No mid-sized city hopes and small town fears
I’m there most of the year
Cause I hate it here
I hate it here

[Bridge]
I’m lonely but I’m good
I’m bitter but I swear I’m fine
I’ll save all my romanticism for my inner life and I’ll get lost on purpose
This place made me feel worthless
Lucid dreams like electricity, the current flies through me,
And in my fantasies I rise above it
And way up there, I actually love it

[Final Chorus]
I hate it here so I will go to
Secret gardens in my mind
People need a key to get to
The only one is mine
I read about it in a book when I was a precocious child
No mid-sized city hopes and small town fears
I’m there most of the year
Cause I hate it here
I hate it here

[Outro]
Quick, quick
Tell me something awful
Like you are a poet trapped inside the body of a finance guy
