Background

Taylor released her tenth studio album, Midnights, on October 21, 2022, to widespread commercial and critical success. It was eventually nominated for six awards at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on February 4, 2024. That night, Taylor won the categories for “Best Pop Vocal Album” and “Album of the Year” for Midnights. In her acceptance speech for the former, she revealed a new studio album, titled THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, and announced its release date of April 19, 2024, which she had been keeping secret for nearly two years. Its cover artwork was subsequently posted on her social media accounts, along with a photograph of a handwritten note.

“Peter” is part of the surprise double-album, THE ANTHOLOGY, which was released on April 19, shortly after the album’s standard edition.

Lyrical Theme

The lyrics of “Peter” explore the complex emotions of unfulfilled promises and the struggle to move on from a cherished past. Taylor delves into themes of regret, lingering hope, and the bittersweet realization that sometimes, even the most deeply felt youthful bonds cannot withstand the passage of time and the differing paths that people take.

The song portrays an intimate dialogue with Peter, an emblematic figure who represents both a specific person and the lost idealism of the past. The narrative deeply resonates with the literary classic Peter Pan, particularly the painful reality of “Peter losing Wendy”, also highlighted in Taylor’s song “cardigan” from the album folklore (2020). In that context, Peter symbolizes eternal youth and Wendy the inevitability of maturation.

The chorus reveals a promise made in innocence, perhaps one Peter never intended to break but that the realities of adult life made impossible to keep. The reference to “cardigan” and “Peter losing Wendy” is particularly poignant as it encapsulates the essence of the conflict between wishing to remain in the Neverland of youth and facing the reality of growth. In the context of the song, Peter represents not only the literal figure who promised to return but also the part of the narrator that desperately wishes to believe in this promise, despite knowing that reality is inevitably more complex and often disappointing. There is an underlying hope that the farewell is temporary. However, this hope is tinged with sadness as the narrator gradually realizes that the Peter of her youth cannot fulfill the promises made in the simplicity of childhood.

The song’s conclusion, where the narrator reflects on the wait and the eventual acceptance of Peter’s disappearance, symbolizes a decisive moment of maturation. She turns off the light, both literally and metaphorically, signaling the end of waiting and the beginning of a new phase of self-acceptance and recognition that some promises, no matter how deep and sincere, may never be fulfilled.

In relation to Taylor’s personal life, this song could have been inspired by her relationship with British singer-songwriter Matty Healy. They first connected in 2014 (when he was 25) but never officially dated, as he was struggling with addiction at the time.

Connection to "cardigan"

In “cardigan,” the narrative suggests that Wendy (Betty) is the one who ends up leaving Peter (James), symbolizing her decision to mature and leave behind the immaturity represented by Peter. However, in “Peter”, the situation is reversed; it is Peter who departs, leaving the narrator waiting. This can be interpreted as an acknowledgment of the reality that often, youthful promises are not fulfilled because people change, grow, and follow different paths. Peter’s departure symbolizes the loss of youthful idealism and the harsh truth that not all promises made can be kept as we enter the complexities of adult life.

Production

Taylor co-wrote and co-produced “Peter” with her regular songwriting partner Aaron Dessner, who produced the majority of THE ANTHOLOGY, the second volume of THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. “Peter” opens with a gentle piano melody that sets a somber and reflective tone. Taylor’s vocals are hushed, conveying a sense of vulnerability and introspection. The limited instrumentation persists throughout, emphasizing the reflective state of the lyrics.

Live Performances

“Peter” received its first live performance acoustically on piano on May 17, 2024, in Stockholm during one of Taylor’s shows on “The Eras Tour” (2023-2024). Before playing the song, she said:

«So, Stockholm, this one I’ve never even remotely performed live before, and it’s one of my favorite songs on TORTURED POETS. I swore I would only play this one for a crowd that I’m absolutely in love with.»

The live audio was released on July 11, 2024. In Toronto on November 15, 2024, Taylor paired “Peter” with “evermore” (2020).

Commercial Performance

Upon the release of THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, “Peter” debuted at No. 46 on the Billboard Hot 100, during the chart week ending on May 4, 2024.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Forgive me Peter
My lost fearless leader
In closets like cedar
Preserved from when we were just kids
Is it something I did
The goddess of timing
Once found us beguiling
She said she was trying
Peter was she lying
My ribs get the feeling she did

[Pre-Chorus 1]
And I didn’t want to come down
I thought it was just goodbye for now

[Chorus]
You said you were gonna grow up
Then you were gonna come find me
You said you were gonna grow up
Thеn you were gonna come find mе
Said you were gonna grow up
Then you were gonna come find me
Words from the mouths of babes
Promises, oceans deep
But never to keep
Oh, never to keep

[Verse 2]
Are you still a mind reader?
A natural scene stealer
I’ve heard great things Peter
But life was always easier on you
Than it was on me
And sometimes it gets me
When crossing your jet stream
We both did the best we could do underneath the same moon
In different galaxies

[Pre-Chorus 2]
And I didn’t want to hang around
We said it was just goodbye for now

[Chorus]
You said you were gonna grow up
Then you were gonna come find me
You said you were gonna grow up
Then you were gonna come find me
Said you were gonna grow up
Then you were gonna come find me
Words from the mouths of babes
Promises, oceans deep
But never to keep
Oh, never to keep

[Bridge]
And I won’t confess that I waited
But I let the lamp burn
As the men masqueraded
I hoped you’d return
With your feet on the ground
Tell me all that you’d learned
Cause love’s never lost when perspective is earned
And you said you’d come and get me but you were 25
And the shelf life of those fantasies has expired
Lost to the lost boys chapter of your life
Forgive me Peter, please know that I tried
To hold on to the days when you were mine
But the woman who sits by the window has turned out the light

[Final Chorus]
You said you were gonna grow up
Then you were gonna come find me
You said you were gonna grow up
You said you were gonna grow up
Then you were gonna come find me
You said you were gonna grow up
You said you were gonna grow up
Then you were gonna come find me
You said you were gonna grow up
Then you were gonna come find me
Said you were gonna grow up
Then you were gonna come find me
Words from the mouths of babes
Promises, oceans deep
But never to keep
