Andrea Gardner Swift

Mother

Andrea Gardner Swift (née Finlay) is Taylor’s mother. She was born on January 10, 1958 in Pennsylvania; the daughter of an engineer who worked throughout Southeast Asia, she spent her first years in Singapore.
Andrea is the daughter of Robert Bruce and Marjorie (Moehlenkamp) Finlay. Marjorie, Taylor’s maternal grandmother, was an opera singer. Back in the U.S Andrea settled in Texas, where she worked as a mutual fund marketing executive. She later met husband Scott Kingsley Swift, a Merrill Lynch financial adviser; the couple tied the knot on February 20, 1988. They had two children, Taylor in 1989 and her younger brother Austin in 1992. In 2012, it was reported Andrea and Scott had separated after 24 years.

«Mom is calculated, logical, business-minded; kind but very, very direct. Makes you better by giving you these little pointers but doesn’t baby you.»

Andrea is seen in a lot of Taylor’s home movies and music videos like “The Best Day,” “I’m Only Me When I’m With You,” and “Christmas Tree Farm“. She also appears in the documentaries Journey to Fearless (2010) and Miss Americana (2020).

In April 2015, Andrea was diagnosed with cancer. Her cancer went into remission, but in Taylor’s 2019 Elle US magazine essay, she revealed that Andrea developed the disease again. A song featuring The Chicks, “Soon You’ll Get Better“, was included on Taylor’s 2019 album Lover. It is about Taylor’s emotions and certain events during her mother’s long history with cancer.
