I Think He Knows

Lover (2019)

“I Think He Knows” is the sixth track on Taylor’s seventh studio album, Lover (2019). Released on August 23, 2019, it was co-written by Taylor and Jack Antonoff. The upbeat pop song captures the giddy beginnings of a potential romance, as Taylor finds herself falling for a crush who may already know exactly how she feels.
In “I Think He Knows,” Taylor explores the appeal of quiet confidence, focusing on someone whose self-assurance makes him all the more attractive. Interestingly, the song’s title also leaves room for a little ambiguity: does he really know how she feels, or is Taylor simply hoping he does?

Background and Release

Taylor began working on Lover during a week in New York in July 2018 while still on the “reputation Stadium Tour,” before the album’s main recording sessions began after the tour concluded that November. “I Think He Knows” emerged during the making of an album Taylor approached from a markedly different creative place than its predecessor, reputation (2017). In an interview with Vogue in 2019, she described Lover as a “new beginning” and a “love letter to love, in all of its maddening, passionate, exciting, enchanting, horrific, tragic, wonderful glory,” while recalling that she wrote from an “open, free, romantic, whimsical place.”

Written and produced by Taylor and Jack Antonoff, “I Think He Knows” was one of several tracks on Lover created through their close creative partnership. Antonoff had previously collaborated with Taylor on 1989 (2014) and reputation, and their work together continued to shape the sound of her seventh studio album. The song’s upbeat pop arrangement reflects the brighter, more playful direction Taylor explored throughout Lover, which she described during the album’s promotional campaign as a departure from the darker aesthetic of her previous record. In a radio interview that year, she said:

«This album in tone, it's very romantic. And not just simply fanatically like it's all love songs or something. The idea of something being romantic, it doesn't have to be a happy song. I think that you can find romance in loneliness, or sadness, or going through a conflict, or dealing with things in your life. It just looks at those things with a very romantic gaze.»

Taylor first teased “I Think He Knows” in the music video for “You Need To Calm Down,” released in June 2019. In one scene, a street sign reading “16th Avenue” appears at the entrance to a neighbourhood. The detail was a subtle reference that Taylor later explained was not random: 16th Avenue in Nashville is home to the city’s Music Row, where many songwriting and publishing companies are based. Taylor had spent time writing songs there earlier in her career, making the sign a small personal reference tucked into the video before “I Think He Knows” itself had been released.

“I Think He Knows” was released on August 23, 2019, as the sixth track on Lover. With its lively sound and understated confidence, the song captures the lighter, more carefree creative perspective Taylor embraced throughout the album.

Lyrical Theme

“I Think He Knows” captures the heady excitement of a new crush, when every little detail about the person you like feels irresistible. Taylor fixates on her love interest’s appearance, particularly his “indigo eyes,” while revelling in the all-consuming feeling of being seventeen and falling for someone. The song also reflects her fascination with “quiet confidence”: the magnetic quality of someone who knows who they are without needing to show off. Her attraction is so strong that even the prospect of seeing him becomes thrilling, turning an ordinary infatuation into something that feels impossible to ignore. When talking about the song, Taylor said:

«Basically, I was playing around with the idea of quiet confidence. There's something so sick about quiet confidence; they're not arrogant, they're not cocky, like, that's obnoxious. But there are certain people who just walk in and they don't need to be arrogant because there's something beaming from within them that they probably aren't even in control of. And when you meet a person like this, you're like, 'Why do I want to walk over there and talk to that person?' I can't explain it, but I think it's this quality. It can be a really shy person, it's not like you gotta be loud. Some people just seem like they know who they are, they don't need to brag about it. And I think that's such an intersting quality because I can't really explain it. And I wrote a song about that. I mention a street called 16th Avenue, and that's a street in Nashville where I used to write songs. The songwriting/publishing houses are on that street, so if you're wondering if I just picked a random number, I didn't.»

Given that Taylor was dating Joe Alwyn during the making of Lover, the song has often been interpreted as reflecting the excitement of their relationship. Rather than waiting for him to make a move, Taylor takes the lead, imagining their future together as an “architect” drawing up the plans for their relationship. Her daydreams quickly extend beyond flirtation to the prospect of making a home with him, while the playful warning that he had better “lock it down” before she loses interest adds a teasing edge to her confidence. She suspects he already knows how she feels, leaving her to wonder whether he will act on their apparent connection. Together, these details make “I Think He Knows” a playful snapshot of the anticipation that comes just before a romance begins.

Production

Produced by Taylor and Jack Antonoff, “I Think He Knows” runs on a punchy bassline and a propulsive, almost marching beat that gives its synth-pop sound a funky edge. Bright guitar accents and shimmering synths keep the track light on its feet, while Taylor’s rapid-fire verses burst into a breathy falsetto in the chorus. Her playful vocal ad-libs and the song’s infectious groove make it feel like a flirtatious dance around the room, capturing the giddy energy of a crush through its sound alone.

Live Performances

Taylor first performed “I Think He Knows” live during “The Eras Tour” on May 21, 2023, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, nearly four years after the song’s release. It was the first surprise song of the evening, performed on acoustic guitar during the tour’s stripped-back acoustic segment. Before playing it, Taylor recalled making the track with Jack Antonoff, saying:

«This is a song that I have never played live before. It’s a song that was just so fun to make, I remember being in the studio with Jack and just bopping to that one. It’s from Lover, and it’s called 'I Think He Knows.'»

The recording was officially released on January 16, 2025, as a bonus track of Lover (Live From Paris).

Taylor brought the song back twice more during the tour, each time pairing it with another track in a surprise-song mashup. On May 17, 2024, in Stockholm, Sweden, she combined it with “Gorgeous” from reputation, linking two songs about the exhilarating early stages of romantic interest. On August 3, 2024, in Warsaw, Poland, she mashed it up with “Today Was A Fairytale,” revisiting a song from her earlier catalogue in a playful pairing that bridged different eras of her career.

Critical Reception and Commercial Performance

“I Think He Knows” was widely singled out as one of the more infectious pop moments on Lover, with critics drawn to its funky groove, rapid-fire delivery and breathy falsetto chorus. The Boston Globe praised its finger-snapping rhythm and compared its ’80s-inspired sound to Prince, while The Washington Post highlighted the song’s flirtatious energy and its near-spoken verses. The Harvard Crimson also named it a standout, noting how its energy builds into an especially catchy moment around the “16th Avenue” refrain.

Not every critic was entirely convinced: Pitchfork described the song as a “thumping electro-pop shout-out to Nashville’s Music Row,” but likened its sound to Carly Rae Jepsen, suggesting that its bright, ’80s-influenced production felt familiar rather than groundbreaking. The Guardian likewise praised the song’s flirtatiousness but felt it did not quite match the impact of “Blank Space.” Even so, its distinctive groove and playful vocal performance helped establish it as a fan-favourite deep cut from the album.

Commercially, “I Think He Knows” charted internationally after Lover was released on August 23, 2019, despite not being issued as a single. In the US, it debuted at No. 51 on the US Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending September 7, 2019, alongside all 18 tracks from Lover, which charted simultaneously following the album’s release. It also peaked at No. 74 on the UK Official Streaming Chart and No. 82 on the UK Singles Downloads and Sales charts.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I think he knows
His footprints on the sidewalk
Lead to where I can’t stop
Go there every night
I think he knows his
Hands around a cold glass
Make me wanna know that
Body like it’s mine

[Pre-Chorus 1]
He got that boyish look that I like in a man
I am an architect, I’m drawing up the plans
It’s like I’m seventeen
Nobody understands
No one understands

[Chorus]
He got my heartbeat
Skipping down 16th Avenue
I got that uhh, I mean
Want to see what’s under that attitude
I want you
Bless my soul
But I ain’t gotta tell him
I think he knows
I think he knows

[Verse 2]
I think he knows
When we get all alone
I’ll make myself at home
And he’ll want me to stay
I think he knows
He’d better lock it down
Or I won’t stick around
‘Cause good ones never wait

[Pre-Chorus 2]
He got that boyish look that I like in a man
I am an architect, I’m drawing up the plans
He’s so obsessed with me and, boy
I understand
Boy, I understand

[Chorus]
He got my heartbeat
Skipping down 16th Avenue
I got that uhh, I mean
Want to see what’s under that attitude
I want you
Bless my soul
But I ain’t gotta tell him
I think he knows
I think he knows

[Post-Chorus]
I want you
Bless my
I want you
Bless my
I want you
Bless my
I want you
Bless my soul

[Bridge]
Lyrical smile
Indigo eyes
Hand on my thigh
We could follow the sparks, I’ll drive
Lyrical smile
Indigo eyes
Hand on my thigh
We could follow the sparks, I’ll drive
“So where we gonna go?”
I whisper in the dark
“Where we gonna go?”
I think he knows

[Chorus]
He got my heartbeat
Skipping down 16th Avenue
I got that uhh, I mean
Want to see what’s under that attitude like
I want you
Bless my soul
But I ain’t gotta tell him
I think he knows
I think he knows

[Post-chorus]
I want you
Bless my
I want you
Bless my
I want you
Bless my
I want you
Bless my soul
I want you
Bless my
I want you
Bless my soul
I want you
Bless my soul
But I ain’t gotta tell him
I think he knows
