Taylor wrote “Haunted” for her third studio album, Speak Now (2010), during a period in which she was developing a more self-directed approach to songwriting. The album represented a significant creative milestone: Taylor described it as more personal than anything she had released before, explaining that she wanted to put into songs the things she had experienced but had not necessarily said aloud. Working on the album over two years, she wrote all 14 tracks on its standard edition herself, partly because her busy touring schedule often left little time to arrange co-writing sessions, but also because she wanted to prove that she could write an entire album without co-writers. “Haunted” was co-produced with Nathan Chapman, her longtime collaborator, who had also co-produced her first two albums. While much of Speak Now built on the country-pop sound of Fearless (2008), the song took a more dramatic musical direction, incorporating a large orchestral arrangement. “Haunted” captures the moment Taylor realizes that someone she loves is slowly falling out of love with her. In her own explanation of the song in a since-deleted post on her website, she described the painful uncertainty of watching a relationship fade while trying to convince herself that nothing is wrong:

«‘Haunted’ is about the moment that you realize the person you’re in love with is drifting and fading fast. And you don’t know what to do, but in that period of time, in that phase of love, where it’s fading out, time moves so slowly. Everything hinges on what that last text message said, and you’re realizing that he’s kind of falling out of love. That’s a really heartbreaking and tragic thing to go through because the whole time you’re trying to tell yourself it’s not happening. I went through this, and I ended up waking up in the middle of the night writing this song about it.»

She explained, “I wanted the music and the orchestration to reflect the intensity of the emotion the song is about, so we recorded strings […] at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles. Live Performances

Taylor first performed “Haunted” in Taylor Swift: Speak Now, a mini documentary that aired as an NBC Thanksgiving special in 2010. The song later featured on the North American and Oceania legs of her “Speak Now World Tour” (2011–2012), where its theatrical staging featured dramatic bell tolls and aerial dancers suspended from enormous bells above the stage. The elaborate production brought the song’s sweeping orchestration to life and made it one of the tour’s most visually striking numbers.

Taylor later brought “Haunted” back in stripped-down acoustic performances, which highlighted a different strength of the song: her vocals.
