London Boy
Lover (2019)
Background and Release
«This album in tone, it's very romantic. And not just simply fanatically like it's all love songs or something. The idea of something being romantic, it doesn't have to be a happy song. I think that you can find romance in loneliness, or sadness, or going through a conflict, or dealing with things in your life. It just looks at those things with a very romantic gaze.»
Taylor Swift
The song also features a spoken-word introduction by British actor Idris Elba, alongside a contribution from comedian and television host James Corden. Taylor explained during a livestream ahead of the album’s release that Elba’s voice was included because he speaks about London at the beginning of the track. She also recalled playing the song for fashion designer Stella McCartney after referencing her in the lyrics; the meeting helped lead to their Lover era merchandise collaboration.
“London Boy” was released on August 23, 2019, as the eleventh track on Lover, which arrived through Republic Records.

Lyrical Theme
«With this song, I wrote about what it was like to say, ‘Bye guys, I’m gonna be here [in London] for a long time.’»
Taylor Swift
Beyond its affection for London, the song celebrates the small, everyday experiences that make a relationship feel personal. Taylor sings about meeting her partner’s friends, spending time in pubs and discovering British customs, from university slang to afternoon drinks. Rather than presenting romance through grand gestures, she focuses on the pleasures of being welcomed into someone else’s world and finding a sense of belonging there. In her interview with BBC Radio 1, she also explained that the line “Babe, don’t threaten me with a good time” came from her British friends, who used the expression themselves. “They say it exactly like that,” she noted, playfully acknowledging how naturally their vocabulary had worked its way into her songwriting.
Taylor’s fondness for London also comes with a touch of humour and self-awareness. The song’s rapid-fire list of neighbourhoods and cultural references prompted some listeners to question whether its itinerary was geographically realistic, while others teased her use of British expressions. Taylor took the confusion in stride, joking that listeners who thought she was describing a single day would never manage it. The bridge adds another personal touch with its reference to fashion designer Stella McCartney: Taylor played her the song, and the meeting led to a merchandise collaboration for the Lover era. As Taylor explained during an iHeartRadio listening session, McCartney responded, “Oh my God, let’s do something.” The result is a song that celebrates not only a relationship, but also the people, places and cultural details that had become part of Taylor’s life in London.

Live Performances
“London Boy” returned to the stage on August 16, 2024, for the second of Taylor’s five Wembley Stadium shows on “The Eras Tour” (2023-2024). Despite its obvious connection to the city, she had not performed it live since 2019, making its acoustic-guitar debut on the tour a surprise for the London crowd. Before playing it, Taylor remarked:
«This whole show has been so fantastic, you’ve been so generous to us. I’ve been so excited to come and hang out with you guys in the back more because you’ve been so loud. And the whole night I’ve just been thinking….‘God, I love the English!’»

Critical Reception and Commercial Performance
Much of the criticism centred on the song’s rapid succession of London landmarks, cultural references and familiar British expressions, which some reviewers found more like a tourist checklist than a nuanced portrait of the city. Others viewed that very enthusiasm as part of its charm: Taylor was writing from the perspective of an American in love, delighting in her partner’s hometown rather than attempting to deliver an authoritative guide to it. The song became one of the more divisive tracks on Lover, illustrating how its deliberately lighthearted approach to romance could delight some listeners while leaving others unconvinced.
Commercially, “London Boy” benefited from the release of Lover on August 23, 2019, debuting at No. 62 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It also reached No. 42 in Australia and No. 54 on the Canadian Hot 100, while peaking at No. 47 on the UK Official Streaming Chart. Although it was never released as a single, its chart entries demonstrated that album listeners were streaming the track across several major markets.

So Long, London
Lyrics
[Spoken Intro]
Idris Elba: “We can go driving in, on my scooter, ah, you know, just round London”
James Corden: “Oh”
[Verse 1]
I love my hometown
As much as Motown
I love SoCal
And you know I love Springsteen
Faded blue jeans
Tennessee whiskey
But something happened
I heard him laughing
I saw the dimples first and then I heard the accent
They say home is where the heart is
But that’s not where mine lives
[Chorus 1]
You know I love a London boy
I enjoy walking Camden Market in the afternoon
He likes my American smile
Like a child when our eyes meet
Darling, I fancy you
Took me back to Highgate
Met all of his best mates
So I guess
All the rumors are true
You know I love a London boy
Boy, I fancy you
[Verse 2]
And now I love high tea
Stories from uni and the West End
You can find me in the pub, we
Are watchin’ rugby
With his school friends
Show me a gray sky
A rainy cab ride
Babes, don’t threaten me with a good time
They say home is where the heart is
But God, I love the English…
[Chorus 2]
You know I love a London boy
I enjoy nights in Brixton, Shoreditch in the afternoon
He likes my American smile
Like a child when our eyes meet
Darling, I fancy you
Took me back to Highgate
Met all of his best mates
So I guess
All the rumors are true
You know I love a London boy
Boy, I fancy you
[Bridge]
So please show me Hackney
Doesn’t have to be Louis V
Up on Bond Street
Just wanna be with you, wanna be with you
Stick with me, I’m your queen
Like a Tennessee Stella McCartney
On the Heath
Just wanna be with you, wanna be with you, wanna be with you
[Chorus 3]
You know I love a London boy
I enjoy walking SoHo, drinking in the afternoon
He likes my American smile
Like a child when our eyes meet
Darling, I fancy you
Took me back to Highgate
Met all of his best mates
So I guess
All the rumors are true
You know I love a London boy
Boy, I fancy you
[Outro]
So please show me Hackney
Doesn’t have to be Louis V
Up on Bond Street
Just wanna be with you, wanna be with you
Stick with me, I’m your queen
Like a Tennessee Stella McCartney
On the Heath
Just wanna be with you, wanna be with you, wanna be with you
I fancy you
I fancy you
