Untouchable

Fearless [Platinum Edition] (2009) | Fearless (Taylor's Version) [2021]

“Untouchable” is track two on the Platinum Edition of Taylor’s second studio album, Fearless (2008). The song was originally written by rock band Luna Halo but Taylor got a co-writing credit on her version because she changed the melody and verses drastically. She sings about dreaming of her crush and wishing they were together. The re-recording of the song, “Untouchable (Taylor’s Version)” was released on April 9, 2021, on Fearless (Taylor’s Version).

Background and Recording

Taylor covered the originally upbeat rock song as a slow and soothing ballad and added it to the Platinum Edition Fearless. Upon its release, many wondered how “Untouchable” made on the album in the first place, since it is a cover and not a song originally written by her. Nathan and Cary Barlowe, the members of Luna Halo and co-writers of “Untouchable”, talked about how Taylor ended up covering the song.

«It originally happened when Scott Borchetta, who’s the president of her label, gave her [our] CD to listen to. Then, when she was doing a TV show called 'Stripped,' he told her she had to come up with a cover. She could have chosen any cover in the world, but that’s what she chose. And we had heard from other people that she was a fan of Luna Halo, so I think it was a combination of those things. We lucked out, really. She covered the song and it sounded amazing, so from there, there were so many YouTube hits on it, and so many people watching it and doing imitations of it. That’s when the label decided that they should put it on the record.»

Nathan Barlowe

Regarding the changes Taylor made to the song, Nathan Barlowe said the following: “She changed the verse quite a bit. The chorus is still pretty true to what it was. When I first heard it, it caught me off guard because I didn’t even recognize the melody of the verse and some of the arrangement. But she’s one of, if not the biggest artist in the world right now, and when she wants to change a little thing about your song, I’m fine with it, you know?”

Live Performances

Taylor first performed “Untouchable” at her show for “Live From Clear Channcel Stripped” in 2008, and later again at Saturday Night Live in 2009 and the Sacramento show during her “Speak Now World Tour” in 2011. Taylor didn’t sing the song again for 12 years, until she chose it as the second surprise song for her show on November 25, 2023, in São Paulo (Brazil) on “The Eras Tour” (2023-2024). She played it acoustically on piano. On July 4, 2024, she played an acoustic mashup of “Untouchable” with “Guilty as Sin?” (2024) in Amsterdam.
