I Knew It, I Knew You

Toy Story 5 | June 5, 2026

“I Knew It, I Knew You” is a song by Taylor from the soundtrack to the 2026 animated film Toy Story 5. It was released on June 5, 2026, through Walt Disney Records. Inspired by the journey of the character Jessie, Taylor wrote and produced the song with Jack Antonoff. It is an upbeat country track about a reunion with a long-lost friend.
Toy Story 5 director and screenwriter Andrew Stanton told Variety: “It’s incredible just how meaningful it’s been having Taylor write and perform this song. Her connection to Jessie and the immediate way she understood what the character was going through was undeniable. The song is so deeply connected to Toy Story. So much so that on first listen, it instantly felt like it had always belonged there, like a long-lost family member. It was kismet.”

Background and Announcement

On April 30, 2026, Taylor’s official website briefly displayed a 48-hour countdown with a sky-blue background, white clouds, and blue-outlined yellow numbers, resembling imagery associated with the Toy Story franchise. It was removed after approximately ten minutes and expired without an announcement. That same day, her official fan engagement team shared a cloud-themed post on social media.

On May 29, Disney/Pixar billboards displaying the initials “TS” against cloud imagery appeared in cities worldwide, interpreted by Swifties and mainstream media as a direct reference to Taylor and Toy Story. The artwork for Taylor’s album 1989 (Taylor’s Version) [2023] was altered on streaming platforms to replace the seagulls in the background with clouds. The following day, Pixar posted a video of the Toy Story character Jessie dancing on top of the “TS” billboard, with a caption referencing Taylor’s single “Shake It Off“. Further promotions included the cover of Taylor’s album 1989 (2014) being updated with a Toy Story-style font; cloud imagery illuminating the Empire State Building; clouds appearing in TikTok searches for Taylor’s name; and her “essentials” playlist on Apple Music being updated to feature only the fifth tracks from her albums, with every “T” and “S” in the lyrics capitalized.

A new countdown appeared on Taylor’s website on June 1, accompanied by an illustration of a house and barn, Jessie, and the “TS” billboard on a hill beneath a cloudy sky. When the countdown ended at 14:00 Eastern Daylight Time (UTC−04:00), the website revealed the song “I Knew It, I Knew You”, set to be released on June 5, two weeks before Toy Story 5‘s release. Officially announcing the song, Taylor wrote on social media:

«It’s a *Toy* Story! You knew it! My new original song “I Knew It, I Knew You” for Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 will be yours on June 5th. I’ve always dreamed of getting to write for these characters who I’ve adored since I was a 5 year old kid watching the first Toy Story movie. I fell instantly in love with Toy Story 5 when I was lucky enough to see it in its early stages, and I wrote this song as soon as I got home from the screening. Sometimes you just know, right?»

The single was made available in three exclusive CD editions: the original version featured in the film, an acoustic version, and a piano version, each with unique vocals and production. In addition, two vinyl variants were available for purchase on Taylor’s official store.

Writing and Recording

“I Knew It, I Knew You” was written and produced by Taylor and her longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff, inspired by Jessie’s story throughout the Toy Story films. She conceived the track after attending an early screening of Toy Story 5 in February 2026 and began writing it once she returned home, finishing it that same day; she said that she had wanted to write music for the Toy Story characters since watching the first film at age five. In an audio clip released on June 5, Taylor said:

«The song 'I Knew It, I Knew You' came about because I was lucky enough to watch a version of Toy Story 5, and I just fell in love with the movie. I immediately connected with the characters, especially Jessie, and wanted to write a song from her perspective. The song came to me very quickly; it was written and I already had a demo version recorded by the end of that same day I saw the movie. So, I was inspired by it right away. I really hope you all like it!»

A press release described “I Knew It, I Knew You” as a return to Taylor’s country roots while incorporating “the styles that have defined” her career as a songwriter and artist. The writer-director of Toy Story 5, Andrew Stanton, stated that upon his first listen, he felt that the song fit within the franchise like a “long-lost family member”.

Sonically, “I Knew It, I Knew You” is an upbeat country and country-pop song with a midtempo rhythm, with Americana and soft pop rock influences. It features banjos, harmonica, strings, piano, drums, guitar, steel pedal, and saxophone, over a steady bassline, played by Antonoff’s bandmates in Bleachers.

The lyrics are about a happy reunion of two long-lost friends. The narrative is ambiguous, depicting the joy of reunion with who could be an estranged friend, romantic partner or someone from childhood.

Music Video

The music video for “I Knew It, I Knew You” was released on Apple Music and Spotify Premium hours after the song’s release on June 5, 2026, and on YouTube two days later. It consists of footage from across the Toy Story franchise, with a particular focus on Jessie. Two days later, it was released on YouTube for free.

Critical Reception

Multiple critics described “I Knew it, I Knew You” as a return to country music for Taylor. Chris Willman of Variety considered it a lively anthem for Jessie with a “patented” bridge. Alyssa Bailey of Elle described it as an emotionally moving song that hints at Jessie’s happy reunion with her first owner in Toy Story 5. Bryan West of USA Today dubbed the song a return to the musical aesthetic of Taylor’s early country tunes, praising the vivid and nostalgic storytelling quality of its lyrics. Rolling Stone‘s Jaeden Pinder it as a catchy but heartfelt song. Liz Shannon Miller, writing in Consequence, likened the song’s twang to that of Swift’s debut album and praised the musical composition for its earworm potential.

Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph commended the “breezily simple yet lush” musical arrangement, “catchy and cheery and effusively upbeat” production, Taylor’s breathless vocal delivery, and the tightly-packed couplets and internal rhymes of the lyricism. Laura Snapes of The Guardian said the song contains some of Taylor’s “loveliest” singing and songwriting, and praised her choice to opt for organic instrumentation in a song for film that is about traditional toys versus technology. Georgie Gassaro of Today admired the song’s “rich imagery” and emotionally charged, nostalgic lyrics.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I knew you
Through the daze of the blades of the grass in summer
Parachutes for the free fall of being younger
I memorized the sound of your bare footsteps running wild
It’s been a long time
Life has ways of leaving those days behind
But seeing you tonight

[Chorus 1]
I remembered I loved you
Came back when it mattered
I saw you, standing there in the light of the window
Wearing that same smile
Man, it’s been a while
But I knew it, I knew you
I knew it, I knew you

[Verse 2]
I knеw you, all your blues like a mood ring changing colors
You did too, therе were times we could fight like brothers
I watched you drive around the bend
For what I thought would be the last time I saw my friend
But love has ways of bringing things back to life
All you said was, “Hi”

[Chorus 2]
And I remembered I loved you
Came back when it mattered
I saw you, standing there in the light of the window
Wearing that same smile
Man, it’s been a while
But I knew it, I knew you
I knew it, I knew you

[Post-Chorus]
I knew it, I knew you
I knew it, I knew you

[Bridge]
Oh, the rivers I cried when we said goodbye
Wondering if I’d made it up in my mind
But now you look me in the eye

[Final Chorus]
And you told me I loved you
Came back when it mattered
I saw you standing there in the light of the window
Wearing that same smile
Yeah, it’s been a while
Oh
Wearing that same smile
Man, it’s been a while
Wearing that same smile
Man, it’s been a while
But I knew it, I knew you

[Outro]
I knew it, I knew you
I knew it, I knew you
I knew it
