Background and Release
“Daylight” appears to have emerged during the main Lover sessions between November 2018 and February 2019. It was written entirely by Taylor, making it one of only three songs on the album without a co-writer, alongside the title track and “Cornelia Street.” The song also became closely tied to the album’s identity: for several months, Taylor considered calling the entire record Daylight. During the Lover Lounge livestream on August 22, 2019, she said:
«I decide an album title based on something that has a nice theme to it and a ring; it's very mood board how I go about [it]. The only time I ever started with a title was reputation. That was the only time I started an album with a title so I began writing songs around that word. For this album, I actually thought the title of this album was going to be Daylight for a couple months. Then I wrote 'Lover' and I was like, 'That's the title.'»

Lyrical Theme
The song’s central contrast is between the love Taylor once imagined and the love she has come to understand differently. She revisits the intensity she once associated with romance—most notably the idea that love should be “burning red”—before arriving at something calmer and more lasting, “golden…like daylight.” Rather than dwelling on what went wrong, she chooses to focus on the happiness of the relationship she has found, culminating in the realization that she no longer wants to “look at anything else” now that she has seen this new perspective on love. The idea of letting go also connects “Daylight” directly to Taylor’s public and personal reckoning during the reputation era. At the “Lover Secret Session,” she said:
«reputation for me, aesthetically and thematically, felt like a very long night of storms and volcanic eruptions, blood, hurricanes, hale, tornadoes, endless fire, an asteroid hit. It felt like trying to figure out what’s what throughout all of that. I did gain an insight that I didn’t have before, which was: even though all this stuff has happened and at times you feel really down about the past, letting it go is a really important step, even if you never fully get there. Reminding yourself to let things go as they present themselves, even if you can’t seem to let them go yet, is a helpful exercise. And realizing that you can find love and friendships in literally the worst times in your life. You can find the best things in your life that you’ll have forever, in temporary, really awful times that will pass.»

Live Performances
In 2024, “Daylight” appeared three more times on the surprise-song set, each time in a different pairing. On February 18 in Melbourne, Taylor performed it on guitar as a mashup with “Come Back…Be Here” (2012); on June 7 in Edinburgh, she played it on piano alongside “‘tis the damn season” (2020); and on October 18 in Miami, she paired it with “this is me trying” (2020). The different combinations gave the song new emotional contexts, placing its message of moving beyond the past alongside songs about longing, nostalgia and self-reflection.
Across these performances, “Daylight” evolved from the conclusion of Lover into a recurring reflection on Taylor’s changing perspective. Its first pairing with “Red” was particularly fitting: the song’s live history began by connecting two very different ideas of love—one defined by intensity and pain, the other by the calm that comes after finally stepping into the light.

Critical Reception and Commercial Performance
Despite the strong reviews, “Daylight” was not released as a single and its initial chart performance was relatively modest, benefiting primarily from the release of Lover. It reached No. 89 on the US Billboard Hot 100, No. 87 on the Canadian Hot 100 and No. 70 in Australia. The song has nevertheless developed a substantial long-term streaming audience.
The reputation of “Daylight” has also grown through retrospective assessments: NME ranked it No. 64 in its 2020 ranking of Taylor’s songs, while Rolling Stone later placed it No. 67, describing it as a passionate sequel to “Clean” (2014) and highlighting its spoken-word outro. Billboard has also included “Daylight” among its list of Taylor’s 100 best songs.
