Fortnight

Feat. Post Malone | Lead Single | THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT (2024)

“Fortnight” is the lead single and opening track of Taylor’s eleventh studio album, THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT (2024). Written by Taylor alongside longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff and American rapper Post Malone—who also features on the track—it was released on April 19, 2024, through Republic Records. More than just an opener, “Fortnight” lays the emotional groundwork for the album, introducing its thesis statement: “I love you. It’s ruining my life.”

Background and Recording

Taylor primarily worked on THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT during the first US leg of “The Eras Tour” in 2023, though “Fortnight” was likely recorded later that year. In an October 2023 interview with Howard Stern, Post Malone mentioned that he had only met Taylor more recently, suggesting the collaboration came together in the latter stages of the album’s creation:

«She is genuinely one of the most kind and considerate people. A fucking hell of a songwriter. Holy shit. Amazing.»

Prior to the announcement of their collaboration, Taylor and Post Malone had only shared a few public interactions. Most notably, he was among the select few she embraced after winning “Artist of the Year” at the 2019 American Music Awards. In an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1, Post shared that the collaboration began when Taylor simply “hit him up.” She brought “Fortnight” to his Los Angeles home studio to record harmonies, and he quickly added a few freestyled melodies that ended up shaping the song’s bridge. He described “rolling into the studio,” hanging out with her, and having a “good day” together. At the time of the interview, he mentioned he hadn’t yet heard the finished version of the track.

Release

Taylor announced THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT during the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on February 4, 2024. Just a day later, she revealed the full tracklist on social media, confirming Post Malone as the featured artist on the opening track, “Fortnight.” The song was released as the lead single on April 19, 2024—dropping alongside the album itself. To mark the occasion, Post Malone shared a thank-you note on social media, writing:

«It’s once in a lifetime that someone like Taylor Swift comes into this world. I am floored by your heart and your mind, and I am beyond honored to have been asked to help you with your journey. I love you so much. Thank you Tay.»

Reflecting on the collaboration, Taylor wrote: “I’ve been such a huge fan of Post because of the writer he is, his musical experimentation, and those melodies he creates that just stick in your head forever. I got to witness that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on ‘Fortnight.’”

To support the release, Republic Records serviced “Fortnight” to contemporary hit and hot adult contemporary radio formats in the US, while Universal Music handled radio promotion in Italy. The single was also made available for purchase as a CD through Taylor’s online store in the United States, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Switzerland. A remix by Blond:ish was released on May 21, 2024, followed by an acoustic version and a Cults remix on July 8, 2024. For Record Store Day 2025, an exclusive 7-inch white vinyl featuring “Fortnight” and the Blond:ish remix was released on April 12.

Lyrical Theme

The lyrical theme of “Fortnight” explores the lingering ache of lost love, emotional entrapment, and the haunting passage of time. The word “fortnight,” a British English term meaning “two weeks,” underscores the idea that even brief moments can leave lasting impacts. True to the tone of TORTURED POETS, the song reflects on the aftermath of a relationship that continues to consume the narrator long after it has ended.

According to Taylor, “Fortnight” serves as a self-contained introduction to the album’s central themes, portraying her descent into emotional chaos triggered by a journey through her worst nightmares. She shared with iHeartRadio in April 2024:

«'Fortnight's is a song that I think really exhibits a lot of the common themes that run throughout this album, one of which being fatalism, longing, pining away, lost dreams. I think it’s a very fatalistic album, in that there are lots of very dramatic lines about life or death, and, 'I love you, it’s ruining my life.' These are very hyperbolic, dramatic things to say. But it’s that kind of album–it’s a dramatic, artistic, tragic take on love and loss. And 'Fortnight', I've always imagined that it took place in this American town where the American Dream you thought would happen to you...didn't. Right? You ended up not with the person that you loved and now you have to live with that every day. Wondering what would've been, maybe seeing that out. And that's a really tragic concept, really.»

Taylor envisions the lyrics of “Fortnight” as a narrative about a woman trapped in an unhappy marriage, who ends up living next door to her former lover in a small American town. Now that he is married to another woman, his proximity reignites dark fantasies within Taylor’s character, including thoughts of killing his wife. The situation escalates when she discovers her own husband’s infidelity, which drives her to consider murdering him as well. By the song’s conclusion, Post Malone’s character—representing the ex-lover—sings of escaping together to Florida.

As the album opener, “Fortnight” introduces many of the recurring themes that resonate throughout THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, establishing the emotional and narrative foundation for the tracks that follow. One example is “Florida!!!” which follows later in the album and finds Taylor’s character in the Sunshine State, seeking a fresh start—without her lover.

Production

“Fortnight” is a melancholic, 1980s-inspired track that carries a subtle yet dramatic, almost cinematic quality—aligned with the album’s literary, emotionally charged atmosphere. The production, crafted by Taylor and Jack Antonoff, blends elements of indie, alternative, and electronic music, creating a sound that feels both expansive and intimately personal.

Music Video

The music video for “Fortnight,” released on April 19, 2024, is a cinematic exploration of emotional turmoil and romantic obsession. Directed and written by Taylor herself, the video features black-and-white cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto, a frequent collaborator known for his work on films like The Irishman and Silence. It stars Taylor and Post Malone as ex-lovers. Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles (who co-starred in the movie Dead Poets Society) portray psychiatrists conducting experiments on Taylor’s character, who is depicted as a mentally deranged patient in a mental facility. The narrative unfolds through surreal and metaphorical imagery, including scenes of electroshock therapy, typewriters, and a dramatic reunion in a barren desert amidst swirling papers. The video is rich with metaphoric visuals, reflecting the themes of TORTURED POETS:

«When I was writing the 'Fortnight' music video, I wanted to show you the worlds I saw in my head that served as the backdrop for making this music. Pretty much everything in it is a metaphor or a reference to one corner of the album or another. For me, this video turned out to be the perfect visual representation of this record and the stories I tell in it.»

Behind the scenes, cinematographer Prieto praised Taylor’s attention to detail, noting: “I find it amazing that she has such a vivid imagination for music, lyrics, and images. She is a storyteller at heart, and she uses all the mediums at her disposal to express herself. It’s not just her songs but the world she has created around her music. Those who follow her can really get immersed in an experience that goes beyond the albums and the videos. I find it fascinating how she connects with her fans and invites them into her subconscious through her art.”

Live Performances

Beginning with the European leg of “The Eras Tour” in May 2024, Taylor added “Fortnight” to the setlist for her sixth headlining tour. The performance featured a dramatic stage setup, with a bed emblazoned with “TTPD” (THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT) and dancers dressed as nurses, underscoring the song’s themes of emotional turmoil and psychological unraveling. One dancer portrayed her former lover, embodying the romantic obsession at the heart of the lyrics. Together, they moved on the bed, visually narrating the tension and longing expressed in the song. Taylor wore a Victorian, white custom Vivienne Westwood gown, intricately detailed with handwritten lyrics from the album.

Critical Reception

Alli Rosenbloom of CNN described “Fortnight” as a “dynamic first track” and “perhaps the album’s catchiest,” praising the seamless blend of Taylor’s and Post Malone’s vocals. Ed Power of The Daily Telegraph noted that Malone’s “breathy singing voice dovetails surprisingly with Swift’s angsty coo.” Writing for PopMatters, Igor Bannikov praised the “buoyant” synth-pop production and hailed the track as “the best opening track in her career.” Lindsay Zoladz, in her review, highlighted the strength of the lyrics, calling “Fortnight” a “potent [reminder] of how viscerally Swift can summon the flushed delirium of a doomed romance.”

Commercial Performance

After just one day of release, “Fortnight” broke Spotify’s all-time single-day streaming record, surpassing the previous peak held by Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” (1994). The song debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, marking Taylor’s fifth chart-topper and tying her with Bad Bunny for the most among solo acts. It was one of nine tracks from the album to debut in the Global Top 10, bringing Taylor’s total to 33 Top 10 entries.

In the US, “Fortnight” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (dated May 4, 2024), with 76.2 million streams, 31.1 million radio impressions, and 19,000 copies sold. It became Taylor’s 12th No. 1 single and seventh No. 1 debut—tying Ariana Grande for the most No. 1 debuts among female artists—and spent two consecutive weeks at the top. On the Adult Pop Airplay chart (dated June 22, 2024), it rose to No. 1, marking Taylor’s record-extending 13th chart-topper and Post Malone’s second.

Internationally, “Fortnight” debuted at No. 1 in the UK (Taylor’s fourth song to do so), Australia (her 12th), Canada, Singapore, and the UAE. It also topped Billboard’s Hits of the World charts in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and the Philippines, and reached the Top 5 in several European markets including Germany, Switzerland, and Sweden. In the MENA region, it peaked at No. 2, and in Asia-Pacific, it reached the Top 5 in Taiwan and Indonesia.

Lyrics

[Verse 1: Taylor Swift]
I was supposed to be sent away
But they forgot to come and get me
I was a functioning alcoholic
Til nobody noticed my new aesthetic
All of this to say
I hope you’re okay
But you’re the reason
And no one here’s to blame
But what about your quiet treason?

[Chorus 1: Taylor Swift]
And for a fortnight there
We were forever
Run into you sometimes
Ask about the weather
Now you’re in my backyard
Turned into good neighbors
Your wife waters flowers
I want to kill her.

[Verse 2: Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift & Post Malone, Post Malone]
All my mornings are Mondays
Stuck in an endless February
I took the miracle move-on drug
The effects were temporary
And I love you
It’s ruining my life
(I love you, it’s ruining my life)
I touched you
For only a fortnight
(I touched you)
But I touched you

[Chorus 1: Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift & Post Malone]
And for a fortnight there
We were forever
Run into you sometimes
Ask about the weather
Now you’re in my backyard
Turned into good neighbors
Your wife waters flowers
I want to kill her.

[Chorus 2: Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift & Post Malone]
And for a fortnight there
We were together
Run into you sometimes
Comment on my sweater
Now you’re at the mailbox
Turned into good neighbors
My husband is cheating
I want to kill him.

[Bridge: Taylor Swift, Post Malone, Taylor Swift & Post Malone]
I love you, it’s ruining my life
(I love you, it’s ruining my life)
I touched you for only a fortnight
(I touched you)
I touched you

I love you
It’s ruining my life
(I love you, it’s ruining my life)
I touched you for only a fortnight
(I touched you)
I touched you

[Outro: Post Malone, Post Malone & Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift]
Thought of calling ya
But you won’t pick up
Another fortnight lost in America
Move to Florida
Buy the car you want
But it won’t start up
Til you touch, touch, touch me
Thought of calling ya
But you won’t pick up

Another fortnight lost in America
Move to Florida
Buy the car you want

But it won’t start up
Til I touch, touch, touch you
