Background and Release

“Come In With The Rain” was not written specifically for Fearless. Taylor recorded a demo version of the song back in September 2006, featuring her with an acoustic guitar. She later released an early mix of the song on MySpace, also in September, only a few weeks before the release of her debut album, Taylor Swift (2006). The journals released along with Taylor’s seventh studio album, Lover (2019), further showed some doodles with lyrics from “Come In With The Rain”, dated October 12th, 2006.

“Come In With The Rain” was finally released as part of Fearless [Platinum Edition] on October 26, 2009, which is a reissue of the original album with six news songs added to the beginning of the tracklist. Taylor told iTunes in an interview:

«The six new songs on the Fearless [Platinum Edition] are songs that I either recorded and wrote really recently, wrote maybe a year ago and almost put on Fearless but decided not to for one reason or another, or are songs that I wrote when I was 14/15 and re-recorded recently. It's a good mixture of songs from different time periods throughout my life. When I make an album, I always have a general theme for it. And when I hear songs, or go back and listen to old ones, there are some that I know fit in with the theme.»

Lyrical Theme

It is speculated that “Come In With The Rain” was written about Taylor’s high school relationship with Sam Armstrong. The other songs presumed to be about Sam are “Should’ve Said No,” “White Horse,” “You’re Not Sorry,” and “The Other Side Of The Door.”

To “come in with the rain” is an old expression meaning that in bad times people come to their senses and realize what they longed for the most was there all along. The lyrics in the song talk about letting go of hope and trying to move on from a difficult relationship, while still having that person in your heart and being willing to accept them back in your life, if they put in an effort.

Live Performance

Taylor first performed “Come In With The Rain” sixteen years after its release. It was the first surprise song during her show on February 10, 2024, on “The Eras Tour” in Tokyo (Japan). Before singing the track on acoustic guitar, Taylor said:

«I'm pretty sure I've never performed this one live. It's one of my favorites and it's from Fearless, it's called 'Come In With The Rain'!»

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I could go back to every laugh
But I don’t wanna go there anymore
And I know all the steps up to your door
But I don’t wanna go there anymore

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Talk to the wind, talk to the sky
Talk to the man with the reasons why
And let me know what you find

[Chorus]
I’ll leave my window open
Cause I’m too tired at night to call your name
Just know I’m right here hoping
That you’ll come in with the rain

[Verse 2]
I could stand up and sing you a song
But I don’t wanna have to go that far
And I, I’ve got you down
I know you by heart and you don’t even know where I start

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Talk to yourself, talk to the tears
Talk to the man who put you here
And don’t wait for the sky to clear

[Chorus]
I’ll leave my window open
Cause I’m too tired at night to call your name
Just know I’m right here hoping
That you’ll come in with the rain

[Bridge]
I’ve watched you so long, screamed your name
I don’t know what else I can say

[Chorus Variation]
I’ll leave my window open
Cause I’m too tired tonight for all of these games
Just know I’m right here hoping
That you’ll come in with the rain

[Outro]
I could go back to every laugh
But I don’t wanna go there anymore
