The Life of a Showgirl

Feat. Sabrina Carpenter | The Life of a Showgirl (2025)

“The Life of a Showgirl” is the titular twelfth and final track on Taylor’s twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl (2025). Co-written by Taylor, Max Martin and Shellback, the song was released on October 3, 2025, and features American singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter. Framed as a story about a fictional performer named Kitty, it looks beyond the glitter and glamour of show business to explore the sacrifices, pitfalls and resilience that come with life in the spotlight.
As the album’s title track and closing song, “The Life of a Showgirl” serves as a final look behind the glittering curtain of the showgirl persona. Its ending brings the story back to Taylor’s own stage, using crowd noise recorded during the final “Eras Tour” show in Vancouver on December 8, 2024.

Background and Release

In March 2023, Taylor launched “The Eras Tour,” a career-spanning project that would continue for almost two years and become the highest-grossing concert tour in history. During the European leg in 2024, the tour also coincided with a period of significant personal and creative change: after reconnecting with Swedish producer Max Martin during the Stockholm shows in May, Taylor began developing what would become The Life of a Showgirl. She had entered a new chapter in her personal life after meeting Travis Kelce in July 2023, a relationship that would later become a defining part of the period surrounding the album. She reunited with Martin and Shellback, who had previously worked with her on RED (2012), 1989 (2014) and reputation (2017), and travelled to Sweden between European tour dates to record the album:

«It was just a different type of muscle I was exercising. At that point in the tour, I was in the European leg of it, which was a lot more shows than I had done on the American leg of it. So, it was more shows, less days off. The phsysical exhaustion and soreness was at an all time high at the same time as I was starting to get to do that show with muscle memory. It took a while for that to happen because it's a three and a half hour show, but I was starting to be able to feel like, 'Okay, my body is getting more tired, and my mind is more able to do this on autopilot. And I never want to do this show on autopilot, so I need to do something to flex these creative muscles, and go in there and really exercise that other part of my brain.' And what it ended up doing was reinvigorating every aspect of my life, including the tour, which made me just able to recommit myself to the show even more.»

“The Life of a Showgirl” was written and recorded in Sweden with Max Martin and Shellback in Sweden. The song features Sabrina Carpenter, whom Taylor described as “the ultimate showgirl”; Carpenter was touring in Sweden at the time and recorded her part while on a day off. Taylor later explained that she specifically wanted Carpenter to be part of the track, marking their first musical collaboration after Carpenter had opened several shows on “The Eras Tour.”

“The Life of a Showgirl” was revealed as the twelfth and final track of the album on August 13, 2025, when Taylor announced the tracklist on New Heights. It was released on October 3, 2025, as the album’s closing track and only collaboration with another vocalist. Its outro incorporates actual crowd noise from Taylor’s final “Eras Tour” show in Vancouver on December 8, 2024. She said hearing that crowd remains a particularly emotional memory: “One thing that I really love about the ending of it is that we actually ended the song with actual crowd noise from my last ‘Eras Tour’ show in Vancouver, so that always chokes me up because it transports me right back to that actual memory of standing on that stage for the last time. On that tour that was so important to me, and the tour that really inspired this album. So, it’s the last track of the album and a really special one to me.”

Lyrical Theme

The song uses a fictional showgirl named Kitty to explore the gap between the glamour of performing and the reality behind it. Taylor’s narrator first sees Kitty as an almost impossibly glamorous figure: she is successful, admired and seemingly has everything the narrator wants. But backstage, Kitty offers a very different perspective, warning that “the life of a showgirl” involves exploitation, sacrifice and being discarded once the industry no longer needs you. Taylor has explained that the story reflects the warnings she herself received throughout her career from people who told her that life in music was not all “flowers and magic.” Rather than presenting Kitty’s warning as simply right or wrong, the song builds its central tension around the choice of whether to follow that advice. In a Track by Track interview, she said:

«The last song on this album is the title track, ‘The Life of a Showgirl.’ It is the story of a fictional showgirl named Kitty and how my character in the song goes to see her perform and is completely inspired by her. But then responding with fakeness she tells it like it is and she kind of warns me off this lifestyle because it’s much more than the glitter and the glamour. There’s a lot else that comes with it. So, it’s kind of a ode to show business and the women who move through those pitfalls and obstacle courses. And I thought who better to be part of this song than the ultimate showgirl, Sabrina Carpenter! And thankfully she said yes and she’s absolutely incredible on this song.»

Kitty’s backstory makes the metaphor more complicated by showing that the showgirl persona is not simply a glamorous career choice but something shaped by wanting to escape an imperfect life and create one’s own identity. Her difficult childhood and determination to have “a taste of a magnificent life” help explain why she pursued the stage despite its costs. The narrator eventually experiences those costs herself: the imagery of bruises, false eyelashes being ripped off and being thrown away turns the polished surface of show business into something much more physical and disposable. Yet the song does not end in disillusionment. After living through the reality Kitty warned her about, the narrator says she is “married to the hustle” and would not have it any other way—acknowledging the pain without deciding that the dream itself was a mistake.

That final shift also makes “The Life of a Showgirl” a song about women passing knowledge between generations of performers. Sabrina’s role is especially significant because she moves from being the person Taylor chose to portray the showgirl alongside her to a kind of real-life counterpart to the song: Taylor has described Carpenter as someone particularly equipped to handle criticism and the pressures of the entertainment industry. Carpenter later said the song spoke to their shared “life experiences” and captured what many young women in the industry go through. In that sense, the title track works on two levels at once: Kitty warns the next woman about the price of the spotlight, while Taylor and Sabrina ultimately stand together in it, accepting both its bruises and its rewards.

Production

“The Life of a Showgirl” leans into the theatrical side of its title with glossy pop production, bright synths, a steady dance-pop pulse and layered vocals that give it the feel of a modern stage number. Sabrina Carpenter’s entrance creates a distinct shift before her voice joins Taylor’s more prominently toward the song’s finale, reinforcing its show-within-a-show quality. In December 2025, Carpenter said that hearing their voices together was something her “ten-year-old” self “could not believe,” adding that Taylor had been “so gracious to think of me for a song that spoke to our life experiences in such a real, genuine way.” She described the song as something that “really sums up what so many young women in this industry go through.”

Critical Reception

The title track received a mixed but generally more appreciative response than some of the album’s more divisive songs. Several critics liked its decision to step away from the album’s straightforward pop format and tell a self-contained show-business story. Pitchfork called it a “charming detour” into country-pop and said Sabrina Carpenter was “a real asset,” while Variety described it as an “anthemic” outlier that closes the album with a narrative about performers passing hard-earned wisdom between generations. The Independent similarly highlighted the track’s country-fied slide guitar, lush synths and “Eras Tour” crowd recording, viewing it as an effective curtain closer.

The song’s theatrical concept and Carpenter collaboration were among its most positively noted elements. Pitchfork felt the track briefly suggested a larger, more ambitious idea for the album—a “big, glorious pageant” built around camaraderie and performance—while The Los Angeles Times described it as “Broadway-ish” and praised its progression from a showbiz hopeful’s naïveté to cynicism. The New Yorker took a more subdued view, calling it a “pretty, moody duet” and focusing on the song’s depiction of the isolation that can accompany extreme fame.

Criticism largely centered on the songwriting and the feeling that the title track does not quite deliver the grand finale its position suggests. Esquire found the wide-screen production promising but felt the song simply ended before fully bringing its story together, while Our Culture called it a lackluster closer and argued that the duet lacked the emotional weight of some of Taylor’s earlier collaborations. Overall, the response reflects a recurring split: critics who connected with the song tended to appreciate its theatrical storytelling, country-pop detour and sense of closure, while detractors found the lyrics too lightweight or the ending insufficiently climactic.

Commercial Performance

“The Life of a Showgirl” made a strong commercial debut despite being an album track rather than a separately released single. In the US, it entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 8, giving Taylor all twelve songs from the album spots in the chart’s Top 12 in its opening week. It remained in the Top 10 the following week at No. 9 before gradually falling to No. 12, No. 21 and then No. 32 over the next few weeks.

Internationally, the title track also performed particularly well in markets where the album dominated the charts. It reached No. 8 on the Billboard Global 200, while peaking at No. 6 in Australia, Canada and Sweden, No. 7 in New Zealand and No. 9 in Germany. In Canada, its No. 6 debut was part of an extraordinary album-wide sweep: all twelve The Life of a Showgirl tracks occupied the entire Top 12 of the Canadian Hot 100, with “The Life of a Showgirl” sitting directly behind “Wood” at No. 6.

The song’s performance was therefore closely tied to the enormous first-week consumption of the album itself rather than to a conventional single campaign. It arrived as the album’s finale and, alongside the other eleven tracks, benefited from the intense release-day streaming activity that made The Life of a Showgirl Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day in 2025. Its chart run ultimately lasted 11 weeks in the US, giving the title track a sizeable commercial footprint even without being promoted as a standalone single.

Lyrics

[Verse 1: Taylor Swift]
Her name was Kitty
Made her money being pretty and witty
They gave her the keys to this city
Then they said she didn’t do it legitly
I bought a ticket
She’s dancing in her garters and fishnets
50 in the cast, zero missteps
Looking back I guess it was kismet

[Pre-Chorus 1: Taylor Swift]
I waited by the stage door
Packed in with the autograph hounds
Barking her name
Then glowing like the end of a cigarette
Wow, she came out
I said, “You’re living my drеam.”
Then she said to me

[Chorus: Taylor Swift]
“Hеy, thank you for the lovely bouquet
You’re sweeter than a peach
But you don’t know the life of a showgirl, babe
And you’re never, ever gonna
Wait, the more you play the more that you pay
You’re softer than a kitten so
You don’t know the life of a showgirl, babe
And you’re never gonna wanna”

[Verse 2: Sabrina Carpenter]
She was a menace
The baby of the family in Lenox
Her father whored around like all men did
Her mother took pills and played tennis

[Pre-Chorus 2: Sabrina Carpenter & Taylor Swift]
So she waited by the stage door
As the club promoter arrived
She said, “I’d sell my soul to have a taste of a magnificent life, that’s all mine.”
But that’s not what showgirls get
They leave us for dead

[Chorus: Sabrina Carpenter, Sabrina Carpenter & Taylor Swift]
“Hey, thank you for the lovely bouquet
You’re sweeter than a peach
But you don’t know the life of a showgirl, babe
And you’re never, ever gonna
Wait, the more you play the more that you pay
You’re softer than a kitten so
You don’t know the life of a showgirl, babe
And you’re never gonna wanna”

[Bridge: Taylor Swift & Sabrina Carpenter]
I took her pearls of wisdom
Hung them from my neck
I paid my dues with every bruise
I knew what to expect
You wanna take a skate on the ice inside my veins
They ripped me off like false lashes
And then threw me away
And all the headshots on the walls
Of the dance hall are of the bitches
Who wish I’d hurry up and die
But, I’m immortal now, baby dolls
I couldn’t if I tried…
So I say

[Chorus: Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift & Sabrina Carpenter]
“Thank you for the lovely bouquet
I’m married to the hustle
And now I know the life of a showgirl, babe
And I’ll never know another
Pain hidden by the lipstick and lace
Sequins are forever and now I know the life of a showgirl, babe
Wouldn’t have it any other way
Wouldn’t have it any other way”

[Post-Chorus: Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter]
Hey, Kitty
Now I make my money being pretty and witty
Thank you for the lovely bouquet

[Outro: Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter]
Thank you for an unforgettable night
We will see you next time
Give it up for the band
And the dancers
And of course, Sabrina
I love you, Taylor!
That’s our show
We love you so much
Goodnight!
