Background and Recording

In March 2023, Taylor launched “The Eras Tour,” a career-defining project that would span nearly two years and ultimately become the highest-grossing tour in history, establishing her as the wealthiest female musician of all time. Beyond its unprecedented commercial success, the tour marked a period of profound personal change and artistic reinvention. In its early months, Taylor ended her six-year relationship with actor Joe Alwyn and briefly rekindled a past romance with musician Matty Healy. These turbulent events unfolded against the backdrop of her peak global visibility and inspired the writing of her eleventh studio album, THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, which went on to become the world’s best-selling album of 2024. Much of the record was conceived while she toured the United States in the spring and summer of 2023.

The following year brought a strikingly different creative direction. After meeting NFL player Travis Kelce in July 2024—a relationship that would later lead to their engagement—Taylor entered what she described as “the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place” of her career. This new chapter inspired her twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, which reflected a brighter, more exuberant sound. To realize this vision, she reunited with Swedish producers Max Martin and Shellback, long-time collaborators who had helped shape the sonic identity of her early pop work on RED (2012), 1989 (2014), and reputation (2017). Taylor revealed that the project began after she reconnected with Max Martin during the Stockholm stop of “The Eras Tour” in May 2024, and in the months that followed she traveled to Sweden between European tour dates to record the album.

Lyrical Theme

Upon the release of The Life of a Showgirl, Taylor told Amazon Music:

«I would say that, lyrically, I had such a blast writing this record because each song is like it's own sort of Choose Your Own Adventure. Each song feels like an era of it's own, it's just a very dramatic, sweeping, epic record full of twelve songs, but each one really packs a punch, and each one is really it's own kind of movie. But the 'Father Figure' lyrics are my favorite. I remember just writing the lyrics just sitting there, being like, 'Hehehe, heheheh.' It's the stuff that I've always wanted to say. The first line of the second verse is my favorite in terms of a visual. You think about what it means and then you realize it's just like, a very descriptive way to say something. And I love that line, and I also love the key-change chorus lyrics. It's just, it was a blast to write! I love stepping into a character like that.»

Interpolation

Upon the announcement that the track would interpolate the song “Father Figure” by the late singer George Michael, his estate released a statement, saying:

«We were delighted when Taylor Swift and her team approached us earlier this year about incorporating an interpolation of George Michael's classic song 'Father Figure' into a brand new song of the same title to be featured on her forthcoming album. When we heard the track we had no hesitation in agreeing to this association between two great artists and we know George would have felt the same. George Michael Entertainment wishes Taylor every success with The Life of a Showgirl and 'Father Figure.'»

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
When I found you, you were young, wayward, lost in the cold
Pulled up to you in the Jag
Turned your rags into gold
The winding road leads to the chateau
“You remind me of a younger me”
I saw potential…

[Chorus 1]
I’ll be your father figure
I drink that brown liquor
I can make deals with the devil
Because my dick’s bigger
This love is pure profit
Just step into my office
I dry your tears with my sleeve
Leave it with me
I protect the family
Leave it with me
I protect the family

[Verse 2]
I pay the check before it
Kisses the mahogany grain
Said, “They want to see you rise.
They don’t want you to reign.”
I showed you all the tricks of the trade
All I ask for is your loyalty…
My dear protégé

[Chorus 2]
I’ll be your father figure
I drink that brown liquor
I can make deals with the devil
Because my dick’s bigger
This love is pure profit
Just step into my office
They’ll know your name in the streets
Leave it with me…
I protect the family
Leave it with me
I protect the family

[Bridge]
I saw a change in you
My dear boy…
They don’t make loyalty like they used to
Your thoughtless ambition sparked the ignition on foolish decisions which lead to misguided visions
That to fulfill your dreams…
You had to get rid of me
I protect the family

[Chorus Breakdown]
I was your father figure
We drank that brown liquor
You made a deal with this devil
Turns out my dick’s bigger
You want a fight, you found it
I got the place surrounded
You’ll be sleeping with the fishes
Before you know you’re drowning

[Final Chorus]
Whose portrait’s on the mantle?
Who covered up your scandals?
Mistake my kindness for weakness
And find your card cancelled
I was your father figure
You pulled the wrong trigger
This empire belongs to me
Leave it with me
I protect the family
Leave it with me
I protect the family
Leave it with me

[Outro]
“You know, you remind me of a younger me”
I saw potential…
