Background and Recording
The following year brought a strikingly different creative direction. After meeting NFL player Travis Kelce in July 2024—a relationship that would later lead to their engagement—Taylor entered what she described as “the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place” of her career. This new chapter inspired her twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, which reflected a brighter, more exuberant sound. To realize this vision, she reunited with Swedish producers Max Martin and Shellback, long-time collaborators who had helped shape the sonic identity of her early pop work on RED (2012), 1989 (2014), and reputation (2017). Taylor revealed that the project began after she reconnected with Max Martin during the Stockholm stop of “The Eras Tour” in May 2024, and in the months that followed she traveled to Sweden between European tour dates to record the album.
Lyrical Theme
«When we go through something that doesn’t work out, we oftentimes look at it as like this major setback. But actually, I’ve found that so many of those instances in my life can catapult you forward in growth, in wisdom, in perspective. And so ‘Opalite’ is a song about forgiving yourself for having gone through something that didn’t pan out the way you wanted it to. Because you know, all of the perfect couples would look at you and say like, ‘When you know, you know, when you don’t, you don’t.’ And when you’re not in that situation, when you don’t know – you know that you don’t know. And so, it’s giving yourself permission to not have it all figured out or not marry the first person you ever dated. I’m just happy that that song exists, and also like that chorus I’m really just stoked about. Like, how absolutely infectious and borderline narcotic it is.»

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
I had a bad habit
Of missing lovers past
My brother used to call it
“Eating out of the trash”
It’s never gonna last
I thought my house was haunted
I used to live with ghosts
And all the perfect couples
Said, “When you know, you know”
And, “When you don’t, you don’t”
[Pre-Chorus 1]
And all of the foes, and all of the friends
They’ve seen it before, they’ll see it again
Life is a song, it ends when it ends
I was wrong
But my mama told me
[Chorus]
It’s alright
You were dancing through the lightning strikes
Sleepless in the onyx night
But now the sky is opalite
Oh, oh-oh-oh-oh, oh my Lord
Never met no one likе you before
You had to make your own sunshinе
But now the sky is opalite
Oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
[Verse 2]
You couldn’t understand it
Why you felt alone
You were in it for real
She was in her phone
And you were just a pose
And don’t we try to love love?
We give it all we’ve got
You finally left the table
And what a simple thought
You’re starving ’til you’re not
[Pre-Chorus 2]
And all of the foes and all of the friends
Have messed up before, they’ll mess up again
Life is a song, it ends when it ends
You move on
And that’s when I told you
[Chorus]
It’s alright
You were dancing through the lightning strikes
Sleepless in the onyx night
But now the sky is opalite
Oh, oh-oh-oh-oh, oh my Lord
Never met no one like you before
You had to make your own sunshine
But now the sky is opalite
Oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
[Bridge]
This is just a storm inside a teacup
But shelter here with me, my love
Thunder like a drum
This life will beat you up, up, up, up
This is just a temporary speed bump
But failure brings you freedom
And I can bring you love, love, love, love, love
Don’t you sweat it, baby
[Chorus]
It’s alright
You were dancing through the lightning strikes
Oh, so sleepless in the onyx night
But now the sky is opalite
Oh, oh-oh-oh-oh, oh my Lord
Never met no one like you before
You had to make your own sunshine
But now the sky is opalite
Oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
