“Opalite” is the third track on Taylor’s twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl (2025). Co-written and produced by Taylor, Max Martin and Shellback, it was released on October 3, 2025, and later became the album’s second single on February 6, 2026. The song reflects on leaving past relationships behind, learning to create your own happiness and ultimately finding love after the wrong relationships have taught you what you truly want.

“Opalite” turns a childhood association with opals into a metaphor for creating your own happiness, while also carrying a personal connection to Travis Kelce, who has named it his favorite song on The Life of a Showgirl. Its glittering, optimistic sound and uncomplicated romanticism make it one of the album’s warmest and most carefree moments.

Background and Release

In March 2023, Taylor launched “The Eras Tour,” a career-spanning project that would continue for almost two years and become the highest-grossing concert tour in history. During the European leg in 2024, the tour also coincided with a period of significant personal and creative change: after reconnecting with Swedish producer Max Martin during the Stockholm shows in May, Taylor began developing what would become The Life of a Showgirl. She had entered a new chapter in her personal life after meeting Travis Kelce in July 2023, a relationship that would later become a defining part of the period surrounding the album. She reunited with Martin and Shellback, who had previously worked with her on RED (2012), 1989 (2014) and reputation (2017), and travelled to Sweden between European tour dates to record the album:

«It was just a different type of muscle I was exercising. At that point in the tour, I was in the European leg of it, which was a lot more shows than I had done on the American leg of it. So, it was more shows, less days off. The phsysical exhaustion and soreness was at an all time high at the same time as I was starting to get to do that show with muscle memory. It took a while for that to happen because it's a three and a half hour show, but I was starting to be able to feel like, 'Okay, my body is getting more tired, and my mind is more able to do this on autopilot. And I never want to do this show on autopilot, so I need to do something to flex these creative muscles, and go in there and really exercise that other part of my brain.' And what it ended up doing was reinvigorating every aspect of my life, including the tour, which made me just able to recommit myself to the show even more.»

“Opalite” was written and recorded in Sweden in 2024. The song’s title came from a word Taylor had previously saved in an ongoing file of words and phrases she liked. She later explained that she learned opalite was a man-made opal and saw the stone as a fitting metaphor for creating your own happiness. Travis Kelce’s birthstone is opal, which gave the image an additional personal resonance.

Taylor announced The Life of a Showgirl during her appearance on Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce’s New Heights podcast on August 13, 2025, revealing its October 3 release date, cover and 12-song tracklist. “Opalite” was unveiled as the album’s third track.

Taylor later revealed that the song was one of Travis Kelce’s favourite tracks on the album, and it was selected as the album’s second single in early 2026. “Opalite” was released as a single on February 6, 2026, accompanied by a music video written and directed by Taylor.

Lyrical Theme

The central theme of “Opalite” is choosing happiness after finally leaving the past behind. Taylor frames the song as a reflection on failed relationships, the tendency to romanticize former lovers, and the pressure of believing that everyone else has already found the person they were “meant” to be with. In her own explanation, the song is about forgiving yourself for relationships that did not work out and accepting that you do not have to have everything figured out—or marry the first person you ever dated. Upon the release of the album in October 2025, she told Hits Radio:

«When we go through something that doesn’t work out, we oftentimes look at it as like this major setback. But actually, I’ve found that so many of those instances in my life can catapult you forward in growth, in wisdom, in perspective. And so ‘Opalite’ is a song about forgiving yourself for having gone through something that didn’t pan out the way you wanted it to. Because you know, all of the perfect couples would look at you and say like, ‘When you know, you know, when you don’t, you don’t.’ And when you’re not in that situation, when you don’t know—you know that you don’t know. And so, it’s giving yourself permission to not have it all figured out or not marry the first person you ever dated. I’m just happy that that song exists, and also like that chorus I’m really just stoked about. Like, how absolutely infectious and borderline narcotic it is.»

That idea becomes the song’s central metaphor. Taylor explained that opalite is a man-made opal, and she loved the parallel between creating a gemstone and creating your own happiness. She described the positive place in her life as something she had to fight for, work for and earn rather than something that simply happened to her. The line about having to “make your own sunshine” therefore works on two levels: it describes surviving difficult periods independently, while also suggesting that happiness becomes more meaningful when you actively choose and build it.

The song is also explicitly connected to Travis Kelce. Taylor has confirmed that Travis’s birthstone is opal and that he loves “Opalite,” making the gemstone metaphor an intentional personal connection. Yet the song’s emotional point is broader than simply celebrating their relationship: Travis represents the person she found after she stopped looking backwards, allowing the song to frame their relationship as the outcome of growth, perspective and a willingness to let go of relationships that were never right for her.

The gemstone metaphor carries an additional personal significance for Taylor that predates the song by almost a decade. In a 2016 interview with Us Weekly, she recalled that opal had been her favorite stone since childhood, explaining that when she was bullied at school, her mother would take her to T.J. Maxx after school to look at opal jewellery. “I thought opals were so beautiful, and somehow it made me feel better. We never bought them, just looked.” The memory gives the song’s central image a deeper emotional history: opals were already associated with comfort and happiness for Taylor long before she used the gemstone as a metaphor for creating her own happiness.

Production

“Opalite” is built around a glittery, shimmering pop sound, with bright synths, crisp percussion and a buoyant rhythm that give the track an almost weightless quality. Its twinkling textures and warm, chiming tones also lend the song a distinctly Christmassy feel, reinforcing its imagery of light, sunshine and finding happiness after a darker period.

Critical Reception

The critical response to “Opalite” was notably warm, especially compared with the more divided reception to The Life of a Showgirl as a whole. Critics repeatedly singled out its optimism, shimmering production and unusually uncomplicated sense of romantic happiness. Variety described the chorus as a “sheer pheromone rush,” while the Los Angeles Times called the song “gorgeous” and praised its laid-back, Fleetwood Mac-inspired groove. The Associated Press highlighted its “almost iridescent” quality and distinctive Swiftian details, while BBC’s Mark Savage described the song as breezy and said it seemed to unfold like a blossoming romance.

A particularly interesting thread in the reviews was the sense that “Opalite” works because it is so unabashedly happy. Esquire called it a “straight-up bop, dizzy in love,” while NME regarded it as an obvious radio single, praising its hook and upper-register vocals. Clash similarly predicted that its infectious chorus could make it a pop song-of-the-summer type hit. Even critics who were less enthusiastic about the album often responded positively to the track: Pitchfork included it among the album’s songs that “shine,” while Slate called it a near-perfect Max Martin-style pop song, although finding its verses less compelling than its chorus and bridge.

The strongest year-end accolade came from USA Today, where Melissa Ruggeri named “Opalite” the best song of 2025, placing it at No. 1 on the publication’s year-end list. Apple Music likewise included it at No. 6 on its “Best Songs of 2025” playlist.

Music Video

Taylor wrote and directed the “Opalite” music video, a whimsical, ’90s-inspired story in which a lonely woman finds romance after a magical spray transforms her life. Domhnall Gleeson stars opposite Taylor, while Cillian Murphy, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Lewis Capaldi and Graham Norton—all of whom appeared alongside Taylor on The Graham Norton Show in October 2025—make cameo appearances. Filmed on 35mm, the video embraces a deliberately nostalgic visual style and premiered on Apple Music and Spotify on February 6, 2026, before being released on YouTube two days later.

Commercial Performance

“Opalite” had a strong commercial life even before becoming a single. Released as the third track on The Life of a Showgirl in October 2025, it debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart, making it one of the album’s immediate standout performers. In the UK, it ultimately spent 39 weeks on the Official Singles Chart and reached No. 1 on the streaming, download and physical singles charts.

Its biggest commercial moment came several months later, when “Opalite” was promoted as a single in February 2026. Following the release of its star-studded music video and a 7-inch vinyl edition, the song jumped 12 places to No. 1 in the UK, becoming Taylor’s sixth UK No. 1 single and, notably, giving The Life of a Showgirl her first album to produce two UK No. 1 singles. In the US, the renewed push had an even bigger effect: “Opalite” returned to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 on the chart dated February 28, 2026, giving Taylor her 14th No. 1; the jump was driven particularly by increased physical sales and new remixes.

The song also proved unusually durable after its initial release. It spent 20 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 by late February, including its second week at No. 1, while maintaining a presence on charts internationally; its peak positions included No. 2 in Australia and New Zealand. What makes its chart story particularly interesting is therefore the two-stage success: “Opalite” initially emerged as one of Showgirl’s strongest album tracks, then received a substantial second life months later, turning an already successful album cut into a genuine No. 1 single.
