THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT
April 19, 2024
Background and Announcement
In December 2023, she was named “Person of the Year” by Time, recognized for her cultural and economic impact on a global scale. And through it all, she appeared radiant—fully in control, smiling her way through a historic peak. Yet behind the scenes, a different reality was unfolding. As she later reflected in The End of an Era documentary:
«I definitely think writing music is a form of therapy. Every record represents something different. The TORTURED POETS album is this purge of just everything bad that I'd felt for two years. It was a really rough time in my life, so the songs reflect that. Feeling like, I'm not a person, I'm just this big conglomerate that no one sees as a real human being. Especially not men that I date. And in the whole process just being like, 'Nothing works. There's no one for me in the world.'»
Taylor Swift
It traces her descent into devastation following the end of her six-year relationship with Joe Alwyn, and the arrival of a new muse who would leave an equally profound mark. But the album is more than a postmortem of total emotional collapse—it also makes an argument: that a two-month fling can ruin you more than the slow death of a long-term love. This is mania set to synths.

Title Significance
But people tend to forget that Taylor has a very sarcastic sense of humor. When considering her personal life, the album title could also have been inspired by “The Tortured Man Club”, a group chat involving actors Paul Mescal, Andrew Scott and Joe Alwyn. It is a reference to characters Joe (Conversations With Friends) and Paul (Normal People) have played in Sally Rooney adaptations.
Much more interesting though is the fact that the title connects music with poetry, two artforms that have always been linked in Taylor’s work. Some of her best songwriting bleeds into poetry, referred to by her as “Quill Songs.” When promoting TORTURED POETS, Taylor stated multiple times that, to her, songwriting and poetry are both tools which enable healing and catharsis:
«This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it. And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry.»

Writing and Recording
«My personal life was hard. I went through two breakups on the first half of this tour, and that’s a lot of breakups, actually. The show was what gave me purpose and was what I could use to get me out of bed.»
Taylor Swift
«We started working on these songs over two years ago and it feels like they have kept us company and evolved in beautiful and unexpected ways through so much life lived during this process. [...] I believe these songs are some of the most lyrically acute, intricate, vulnerable and cathartic Taylor has ever written and I am continually astonished by her skills as a songwriter and performer.»
Aaron Dessner
Two artists also feature on songs together with Taylor. Post Malone is an unexpected addition to Taylor’s musical universe, although the two had been friendly for years. He lends his vocals on the opening track, “Fortnight,” which he also has writing credits on. Florence Welch of the band Florence + The Machine made a rare appearance on someone else’s album, co-writing the song “Florida!!!”. She praised Taylor in an interview with British Vogue: “There’s the sort of bigness of Taylor Swift The Phenomenon, and then there’s the Taylor I spend time with in the studio, who is just the sweetest and most down to earth. We had such a fun time!”
Lyrics and Themes
Because in many ways, on this album Taylor paints an unflattering portrait of herself. She chronicles the end of her six-year relationship with Joe Alwyn and the brief but intense romance with the rather controversial Matty Healy that followed shortly after. When that relationship abruptly ends after just two months, Taylor is left bereft and bewildered. She delves into the emotional fallout of betrayal and longing in vivid detail, singing of being so depressed she can’t get out of bed, comfort-eating children’s cereal, and crying at the gym. As she said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in October 2025:
«THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT was really highlighting the facets of me that are a writer that's earnest, stoic, and raw. Sort of the sprawling part of it, where part of me wants to be like, "I'm just going to write down everything and give you everything I wrote." It's raw, and pain in excruciating detail. That was the character of the poet.»
Taylor Swift
THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT often examines these questions of identity through religious and spiritual motifs, with Taylor grappling with morality, fate, and forgiveness. She repeatedly reflects on divine influence over her choices and the pain she endures. Ultimately, the record portrays love, poetry, and faith as intertwined forces, presenting songwriting as a cathartic means to process and transform emotional turmoil.
Composition
The second half of the album, mostly produced with Aaron Dessner, shifts to a more acoustic, folk-oriented palette. Picked guitars, soft piano, and subtle synths create space for intimate storytelling, letting Taylor’s lyrics breathe. Here, she turns inward with character studies like “Cassandra,” “Peter,” and “Robin,” and wrestles with self-reflection on tracks like “The Albatross,” “Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus,” “I Look in People’s Windows,” and “I Hate It Here.” The acoustic palette amplifies the emotional subtleties of her writing, creating a world that’s at once intimate, confessional, and unflinchingly honest.

Release and Promotion
Apart from Taylor talking about the album on “The Eras Tour,” promotion spanned multiple channels, prompting fans to search for Easter eggs across platforms. Apple Music featured five Taylor-curated playlists inspired by the five stages of grief, Spotify created a pop-up library at The Grove in Los Angeles, and QR code murals worldwide linked to unlisted YouTube shorts. Instagram and Threads included interactive countdowns and shimmer effects, while iHeartRadio and Sirius XM offered special programs; iHeart even temporarily rebranded as “iHeartTaylor.”
THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT officially dropped on April 19, 2024—coincidentally the date marking the start of the American Revolution, when the US split from Britain. A nod to Taylor’s dry humor. Two hours later, a surprise digital release of the double-album edition, THE ANTHOLOGY, added 15 bonus tracks. Despite the frenzy, Taylor skipped traditional media appearances during release week, marking her lowest in-person engagement for a new studio album. She later explained her choice to Jimmy Fallon in October 2025, saying that “release week meant just putting my phone in a drawer.” She went into more detail on Radio 2’s Breakfast Show:
«I was in such a different place in my life when I wrote [the album]. Just miserable. And then when I put it out, I was so happy! So, it was like, 'I love this beautiful art about misery. I, however, am not miserable anymore, so it feels weird to talk about the record.' Because you can be proud of the work, but you can also just not relate to that person you were.»
Taylor Swift
In the months that followed, she released live versions of TTPD tracks as bonus content for the standard edition via her website. Other limited physical editions included acoustic versions of select songs, while exclusive digital variants offered first-draft phone demos, giving fans an intimate glimpse into the album’s creation.

The Anthology
«I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so here’s the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology. 15 extra songs. And now the story isn’t mine anymore…it’s all yours.»
Taylor Swift
If listened to on its own, THE ANTHOLOGY further positions itself as a counterpart to folklore (2020) and evermore (2020), not only thematically but also sonically, thanks to Aaron Dessner’s production. Musically restrained and mostly acoustic, the tracks allow subtle lyrical nuances to shine. Here, Taylor contributes many beautiful, though melancholic, tracks to the world she created for TTPD—a secret garden in her mind, accessible only to her, as she reflects in “I Hate It Here,” a standout in her discography.
Critical Reception
Still, many hailed TTPD as a landmark in Taylor’s discography, praising its ambitious compositions and lyrical depth. Publications including The Independent, The Times, and PopMatters called it one of her strongest albums, while Variety and The Observer highlighted standout tracks as some of the best of her career. Taylor’s songwriting drew particular acclaim. Critics noted the album’s cohesion, sophistication, and wit, with reviewers from Financial Times, The Guardian, and American Songwriter emphasizing her risk-taking, stylistic evolution, and character-driven lyricism. The record’s unfiltered emotion was also celebrated, described as “spell-binding,” “gloriously chaotic,” and “audacious” by Clash, Rolling Stone, and Variety.
Some negative reviews focused on the album’s length and intricate lore, suggesting it wasn’t made for casual listening. As the New York Times observed, fully understanding the album requires seeing it through her fans’ eyes: “[The question is] not just what Swift is saying, but what she is telling her fans, and how they will respond.”
Several commentators noted that early reviews were rushed. The album’s length, double-album format, and dense, self-referential lore required time to digest, which some critics did not give. As Slate’s Chris Molanphy and CNN’s Oliver Darcy later acknowledged, spending more time with the record revealed its depth and subtlety, leading them to revise their initial impressions and praise it as one of Taylor’s strongest works. People even called it her “Most Important Album,” noting it had simply been judged too soon.

Commercial Performance
In the United States, the album accumulated 1.6 million album-equivalent units in four days, selling 700,000 vinyl LPs to break the record for the highest single-week vinyl sales previously held by 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (2023). It broke the single-week streaming record previously held by Drake’s Scorpion (2018), amassing 799 million on-demand streams in six days. After a full week of availability, THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT debuted atop the Billboard 200 with 2.61 million units, including 1.914 million pure copies and 891.34 million on-demand streams. It became Taylor’s 14th No. 1 album, tying her with Jay-Z for the most chart toppers among soloists. The album also registered the second-largest week by overall units and the third-largest week by pure sales in Billboard history. Taylor reacted to the news on social media, writing:
«My mind is blown. I’m completely floored by the love you’ve shown this album. 2.6 million ARE YOU ACTUALLY SERIOUS?? Thank you for listening, streaming, and welcoming Tortured Poets into your life. Feeling completely overwhelmed.»
Taylor Swift
THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT broke records worldwide as well. In Germany, it set the largest streaming day for an album and the highest sales week for an international solo artist in seven years. In the UK, it became the fastest-selling album by a non-British artist in 18 years, tied Taylor with Madonna for the most female No. 1 albums (12), and set records for vinyl sales and weeks at No. 1 (8). In Australia, it was her 13th No. 1 album, with record-breaking simultaneous Top 10 (10), Top 50 (29), and Top 100 (31) singles entries. In Canada, it debuted atop the albums chart as her 14th consecutive chart-topper, setting single-week vinyl and streaming records.
Accolades
Additionally, the album received two nominations for the 67th Grammy Awards (“Album of the Year” and “Best Pop Vocal Album”). “Fortnight” also received three nominations, as did Taylor’s collaboration with Gracie Abrams, “us.” This marked Taylor’s record-extending seventh nomination in the “Album of the Year” category. Reacting to the news, she told the crowd during one of her “Eras Tour” shows in Toronto:
«What you did with embracing the album, it’s truly blown my mind. It’s truly emotional for me. I wrote it during the 'Eras Tour,' right? I made that album, trying to keep it a secret from you guys, and then announced the album. And then we were working really hard to secretly put together a new chapter from the 'Eras Tour' of THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. We wanted to surprise you with it, and we did. And you guys have just been so wonderful about digging into this album, and really understanding where I was coming from with it. You made it like, by far the biggest debut week I’ve ever had with an album, and you kept it at No. 1 for nearly four months, and the most recent thing that you did, because everything that happens is the direct reflection of the passion that you show, is you guys got this album nominated for six Grammys. It’s so unbelievable, so thank you!»

Impact and Legacy
«TORTURED POETS is an album that I think, more than any of my albums that I’ve ever made, I needed to make it. It was really a lifeline for me, just the things I was going through and the things I was writing about. It kind of reminded me of why songwriting is something that actually gets me through my life. And I’ve never had an album where I needed songwriting more than I’d needed it on TORTURED POETS.»
Taylor Swift
«The best bodies of work are when people drill into the most personal, the most if-you-know-you-know kind of stuff. I think the depth of THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT was surprising to people because I think people are constantly surprised when artists continue to be artists. You see so many people take the wrong turn and pander and become terrified of what they could lose. That’s the recipe for all the worst music, and I can only relate to people who don’t give a fuck. That next body of work—it doesn’t matter how big your audience is, it either comes from the depths of you or it doesn’t. And I love that album so much because the whole thing is so remarkably vulnerable.»
